Summary

On a VM host, a package build whose source could not be reached hung until its RPC timed out at 240 s. It now fails within about 15 s and names the package, the host and the reason.

  • A source download bounds its connect at 15 s across all of a host's addresses. A gs:// source bounds the wait for its first answer.
  • The build reports the build of <package> could not reach <host>: <reason>.
  • When a box's egress rules refuse a host name that a build's own connection named, the error gives the next step: To allow it, activate a new session with --network own_ip --allow-dns-hosts <host>. The step is left out for literal addresses and for web sources, where it would not work.
  • A short build step that ends during its network attach no longer fails a build that worked.

This fixes the hang only. Reaching a declared source from a VM moves to build boxes in separate work, per gominimal/arch#167.

Refs #3058

Behaviour changes

  • A gs:// source read stops retrying a failing first answer after 15 s, not 300 s.
  • An own-address box in a VM still cannot fetch an uncached web source. It now fails fast.

Test plan

  • just ci on macOS
  • On native Linux: just test, doctest, test-ignored, zoned-link-check, clippy. Of 5,339 tests, 1 failed; of 34 ignored tests, 14 failed. Three of those 15 also fail on the base commit. The other 12 are classifier_root_integration, which refuses to run on a host with its own classifier tree, so they did not execute. Two of them cover web-source and build behaviour in a box leaf.
  • On a real VM: the no-answer and deny-all failures, with fresh state for each case
  • Not run: just e2e, just test-vm, just test-cross
  • These ran before a rebase over three commits on main, which overlap only in the NET spec.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Package builds now fail after a 15-second connection timeout and report the package, destination host, and reason.
    • Connection errors provide clearer destination details, including the host and port where available.
    • When a build is blocked by egress rules for a hostname, the error suggests how to allow that host. No suggestion is shown for IP addresses or web-source failures.
  • Documentation
    • Updated networking requirements to describe package-source timeout behavior and hostname allow-list guidance.

A package build for an own-address box attaches to the box's network
after its process starts. A short build step, such as claude-code's
chmod and mv, can end before the attach finishes. Its namespace goes
with it, the attach fails on `nsenter`, and the launch killed a process
that had already ended and failed a build that had worked.

An attach that fails after its process ended now leaves that process's
exit status as the result. The plan's release still runs. A failed
attach of a process that still runs stays a failure.

Found on the way to [#3058](#3058):
this failure was hidden behind the source fetch that never finished.
On a VM host a source download that leaves as the daemon's own traffic is
dropped with no answer, so an activation hung until its RPC timed out at
240 s. See [#3058](#3058).

A download now fails within 15 s. A web download bounds its connect across
all of a host's addresses, on the placed relay too. The Google Cloud Storage
client has no connect bound and retries for minutes, so a `gs://` source
bounds the wait for its first answer. That bound ends with the first answer,
so a long download is not limited. It also means a `gs://` read gives up
retrying a failing first answer after 15 s, not 300 s.

The failure names the host, and the build reports the package, the host and
the reason. The reason is what the download saw, such as `no answer after
15s`, because no answer can have several causes and the download cannot tell
them apart.
A build the egress rules refused named the package, the host and the rules,
and stopped there. The person who read it had no command to run. It now adds:

To allow it, activate a new session with --network own_ip
    --allow-dns-hosts <host>

The step names `--network own_ip` because on the default network the flag
alone is refused at create. A destination's port is dropped from the flag's
value, because a host allowance covers every port of the addresses it pins.

The step appears only on a connection the build opened itself. It is left
out for a literal address, which that flag does not take. It is left out for
a web source too: an own-address box has no classifier leaf, so its build
fetches the source as the daemon's own traffic, and in a VM no rule of the
box lets that out. It names no `minimal.toml` key, because none reaches a box
until [#2702](#2702).

Refs [#3058](#3058)
A source download that cannot connect within 15 seconds fails the build and
names the package, the host and the reason. A refusal of a host name that a
build's own connection named gives the command options that allow it.

Walkthrough

Package source downloads now use bounded connection waits and report recognized failures with package and destination details. Egress-refusal messages can suggest activation options for eligible hostnames. Network attachment now handles children that exit during a failed attach.

Changes: Package source connection handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound source connection waits
crates/common/src/remote_storage.rs, docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
Web and GCS downloads use bounded waits. Placed downloads divide the connection-timeout budget across resolved addresses. Tests and the specification cover these limits and timeout messages.
Format unreachable-source errors
crates/minimald/src/env.rs, crates/minimald/src/box_ops.rs
Build and in-box installation errors use a formatter for recognized source-connection failures. Other errors remain unchanged. Tests cover the recognized format and unrelated errors.
Add guidance to eligible egress refusals
crates/boxes/src/lib.rs, crates/minimald/src/env.rs, crates/minimald/src/box_actor/tests.rs, docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
Egress-refusal messages can suggest activation options for eligible DNS hostnames. The public DNS-host validator and tests cover hostname suggestions and cases where no suggestion is added.

Child-aware network attachment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Attach networking with child state
crates/sandbox/src/lib.rs, crates/minimald/src/env.rs
PlannedLaunch::attach_child returns an optional network guard. Callers tear down networking only when a guard is returned. Tests cover attachment outcomes and plan release.

MEDIUM · correctness · confidence 0.55 · in connect

The relay divides the 15 s connect bound equally over every address of the host. A host with many addresses gives each one a small share, for example 1.5 s for ten. A reachable address on a slow link can then fail where the old per-address 15 s worked. Dead addresses that fail fast also leave their share unused. Track one deadline instead. Give each attempt the time left, divided by the addresses left.

First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so
and change nothing.

Include name resolution in the connection deadline.

Relay::connect starts the TCP budget after name resolution. If nameservers drop queries, resolution alone can exceed the 15-second limit in NET-155.

Use one deadline for resolution and the TCP connections. Keep successful downloads outside that deadline.

Carry unused connection time forward.

If earlier addresses fail immediately, Relay::connect still gives the last address only its fixed share. With four addresses, a connection that needs 4 seconds can fail after 3.75 seconds, even though the 15-second budget has time left. This can fail an uncached package build.

Recalculate each share from the remaining budget and addresses. Add a test where early addresses fail quickly and a later address connects within the remaining budget.

Wait for plan release before the next build step.

When attach fails after a step exits, PlannedLaunch spawns abandon but does not wait for it. The next step can replace OwnIpNetwork’s reservation before that task runs. abandon can then release the new lease and leave the old lease held.

Await the failed attach’s release before returning Ok(None). Keep the drop-based release for cancellation.

Review comment at @crates/sandbox/src/lib.rs around lines 2649 - 2651:
In the PlannedLaunch failed-attach path, wait for that launch’s reservation
release to finish before returning Ok(None), so the next build step cannot
replace the reservation while abandonment is pending. Preserve the drop-based
release behavior for cancellation.

Specify the egress-refusal message and its scope.

The requirement does not say where the next step appears or that it requires a new session. Clarify that it applies to the build’s own connections, not web-source fetches, and only to names accepted by --allow-dns-hosts.

Suggested spec change

- - IF the egress rules of a box refuse a host name that a connection of its package build names, THEN THE SYSTEM SHALL name the command options that allow that host.
+ - IF the egress rules of a box refuse a non-IP host name accepted by `--allow-dns-hosts` that a connection of its package build, other than a web-source fetch, names, THEN THE SYSTEM SHALL state in the build error that activating a new session with `--network own_ip --allow-dns-hosts <host>` allows that host.
+ - IF the failure is a web-source fetch, or the destination is a literal address or a name that `--allow-dns-hosts` cannot admit, THEN THE SYSTEM SHALL omit this next step from the refusal.

Review comment at @docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
around lines 729 - 731:
Clarify the egress-refusal requirement so the next step appears in the build
error only for the build’s own non-web-source connections to non-IP host names
accepted by `--allow-dns-hosts`; specify that it advises activating a new
session with the relevant `--network own_ip` and `--allow-dns-hosts` options.
Require the refusal to omit this next step for web-source fetches, literal
addresses, and names those options cannot admit.
