    What

--animate now warns once on stderr when the animation is headed somewhere it positively will not play, instead of leaving an unexplained static first frame. kittyview sends its animation (a=f frames plus an a=a control) with q=2, so the terminal's refusal is otherwise suppressed.

The kitty graphics protocol has no capability query for animation, so unlike graphics support this is unavoidably a judgement from names. TerminalInfo::supports_animation() returns false only where the implementation's own source confirms animation will not play; unrecognised terminals and unreadable versions get the benefit of the doubt, matching supports_unicode_placeholders.

    The warn list, with sources

    • Zellij (any version, any layer of the mux stack): rejects a=f/a=a/a=c with ENOTSUPPORTED (zellij-server/src/panes/kitty_graphics/parser.rs:333-338 in v0.45.1). Warns even under --force, whose existing environment check already spots Zellij for placement.
    • Konsole: processGraphicsToken() dispatches only on a=t/T/q/p/d; animation actions fall through silently, with no reply. Unchanged from the MR that introduced kitty graphics in 22.04 ("Animation ... not supported") through master.
    • iTerm2: parses the animation actions into handlers that are literal // TODO stubs (KittyImageController.swift), identical from v3.6.0 through stable v3.7.2.
    • Ghostty below 1.4.0: every release through v1.3.1 answers with "ERROR: unimplemented action" (graphics_exec.zig @ v1.3.1). Animation merged to main in PR #13943 for the 1.4.0 milestone, hence a GHOSTTY_KITTY_ANIMATION = (1, 4, 0) threshold in the style of the existing Zellij one.

WezTerm is deliberately absent: a=f and a=c are fully implemented (term/src/terminalstate/kitty.rs) and frames play through its animated-image path with the per-frame z= gaps kittyview sends; only the a=a control is ignored (tracking issue #986). Animations move there -- at worst the first frame's delay, set via the ignored a=a, is off -- so "positively will not animate" does not hold.

    Decisions

    • Independent of check_terminal's at-most-one-warning rule. That rule collapses two diagnoses of one symptom (the image never arriving) into the more specific one; this is a different symptom (the image arriving and not moving), and both can be true at once -- e.g. Konsole under tmux with passthrough off, where each warning is separately actionable.
    • Fires only for real animations: gated on frames.len() > 1, so --animate photo.png stays silent -- a static image shows the same single frame everywhere, and the terminal is not the problem.
    • Naming: when Zellij is in the stack the warning names Zellij (with version if known) rather than the terminal, since Zellij intercepts regardless and the terminal's name may only be a leaked environment variable.

    Tests

13 new unit tests: the predicate across the full name list (including Zellij with a Confirmed graphics probe, which still refuses -- a=q OK says nothing about animation), Ghostty version thresholds with rc/dev/unparseable suffixes, Zellij deep in the stack and with leaked terminal names, and the warning message itself via a pure animation_warning() helper structured like the existing unsupported_message. cargo test (180), cargo clippy -- -D warnings, and cargo fmt --check all pass.

    Summary by CodeRabbit

    • New Features
      • Added warnings when animations are unsupported by the detected terminal environment.
      • Warnings identify Zellij or the relevant terminal and clarify that only the first frame will be displayed.
      • Added terminal-specific support detection, including Ghostty 1.4.0 or later and nested Zellij environments.
      • Warnings apply to logo, file, and standard-input animations; supported, unrecognized, and WezTerm environments remain unaffected.
    • Documentation
      • Updated animation-support documentation to explain terminal compatibility and kitty’s animation protocol limitations.

    …l not play

kittyview emits animation as a=f frames driven by an a=a control, all with
q=2, so a terminal that refuses them does so silently: the user sees a
static first frame and no explanation. The protocol has no capability
query for animation, so unlike graphics this is a judgement from names --
false only where the implementation's own source confirms animation will
not play, with unrecognised terminals (and unreadable versions) given the
    benefit of the doubt.

The warn list, each entry read from the implementation's own source:

    - Zellij (any version, any layer of the stack) rejects a=f and a=a with
ENOTSUPPORTED -- including under --force, whose existing environment
      check already spots it.
    - Konsole's parser dispatches only on a=t/T/q/p/d; animation actions fall
through silently (unchanged since kitty graphics arrived in 22.04).
    - iTerm2 parses the animation actions into TODO-stub handlers (through
      stable 3.7.2).
    - Ghostty answers them with "ERROR: unimplemented action" until animation
lands in 1.4.0, so only versions known to predate it warn.

WezTerm is deliberately absent: it plays a=f frame data through its
animated-image path and ignores only the a=a control, so animations do
move there (at worst the first frame's delay, set via a=a, is off).

The warning is independent of check_terminal's at-most-one-warning rule:
that rule collapses two diagnoses of one symptom (the image never
arriving), while this is a different symptom (the image arriving and not
moving), and both can be true at once. It also fires only when --animate
actually produced more than one frame -- a static PNG shows the same
single frame everywhere, and the terminal is not the problem.

Do not treat an unreadable Ghostty patch as version 0.

semver_triple() converts 1.3.nightly to (1, 3, 0). supports_animation() then returns false because that value is below GHOSTTY_KITTY_ANIMATION. XTVERSION detection preserves any non-empty value inside Ghostty(...), so this input is reachable. The result contradicts the benefit-of-the-doubt policy for unreadable versions.

Parse a numeric patch prefix for forms such as 1.3.1-HEAD. Return None when the patch has no numeric prefix.

semver_triple() defaulted an unparseable patch component to zero, so a
    nightly reporting 1.3.nightly parsed as (1, 3, 0) and supports_animation()
warned from it -- a claim to positive knowledge the string does not make,
and dev builds are exactly where version-to-capability mapping breaks
down. A suffixed patch (1.3.1-HEAD) still counts by its numeric prefix; a
patch with no digits now leaves the whole version unread, which both
callers already treat as benefit of the doubt (no animation warning, and
the graphics capability query has the final say for Zellij). A missing
patch is still zero: 0.45 means 0.45.0.
