open_image: tolerate display-creation failure in headless mode - #67
When GIMP runs headless (gimp -i — e.g. when an MCP client drives GIMP without a GUI), there is no display backend. In _open_image, Gimp.Display.new(image) then raises constructor returned NULL even though Gimp.file_load() loaded the image successfully:
Exception: constructor returned NULL
So open_image reports an error after every successful load in headless mode, while subsequent tools (adjustments, get_state_snapshot, export_image) still operate on the loaded image — which is confusing for agents doing edit → verify → refine loops.
Fix
Wrap display creation and displays_flush() in try/except, keep the image open, log one line, and report display_opened: false. No behavior change in normal GUI mode.
Verified against GIMP 3.2.2 on Ubuntu with a headless instance (gimp -i -b "(plug-in-mcp-server #:run-mode 1)"), driving the full pipeline over MCP:
open_image now returns success with correct metadata and display_opened: false (previously constructor returned NULL)
adjust_brightness_contrast → get_state_snapshot → add_text → export_image all succeed on the loaded image, and the returned snapshot shows the edit applied
Image metadata is now returned when the image loads successfully but its display cannot be opened or refreshed. The response indicates that the display did not open, while image-loading failures continue to return an error. This keeps details such as dimensions and color mode available when display creation or refresh fails.
In headless GIMP (gimp -i, e.g. driving GIMP from an MCP client), there
is no display backend, so Gimp.Display.new() raises "constructor
returned NULL" even though Gimp.file_load() succeeded. This made
open_image return an error after every successful load, while
subsequent tools (adjustments, export, snapshots) still operated on the
loaded image.
Wrap display creation and displays_flush() in try/except, keep the
image open, and report display_opened: false instead of failing.
Verified against GIMP 3.2.2 on Ubuntu with a headless instance:
open -> adjust_brightness_contrast -> get_state_snapshot -> add_text
-> export_image all succeed and the snapshot shows the edited image.

Walkthrough
When display creation or flushing fails after an image loads, _open_image logs the error and returns image metadata with display_opened set to false. Image-load failures still return an error.
_open_image continues after display creation or flushing errors and reports display_opened as false. The standalone test stubs GIMP and checks the returned image metadata when display creation raises an error.
Fix the failing lint check before merging. A flush failure can also incorrectly tell callers that no display opened.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 956b8
The inspected change does not broaden file access or tool authority. The remaining uncertainty concerns partial display failure: callers may receive display_opened=false after display creation succeeded but refreshing failed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure remains the connected GIMP instance and files accessible to its existing loader. The changed response can allow an agent workflow to continue after display failure, but loading and later image operations were already reachable; no broader tenant, service or credential scope was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The socket handler, command dispatch and client transport implementations are unchanged against the merge base. The display exception handler runs only after file loading, so it does not grant additional request authority or change which path is passed to the loader.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing close-image operation enumerates GIMP displays by image identity and attempts their deletion before deleting the selected image. Cleanup therefore does not depend on the local display variable cleared by this PR. Selection remains index-based, and this unchanged cleanup path does not prove atomic recovery under concurrency or interruption.

Cover the display-creation fallback with a test that forces a display failure.
The fallback in _open_image returns display_opened: False when Gimp.Display.new(image) or Gimp.displays_flush() raises. The open_image checks in tests/test_add_text_metadata.py and tests/continuous_edit_test/continuous_edit_test.py read only status and image_id. No test reads display_opened or injects a display failure, so a regression that changes the fallback value would not be caught.
A type check on display_opened does not detect this regression. The field is always a boolean (display is not None), so a fallback that returned True would still pass. The open_test_image helper also needs a plugin running on localhost:9877.
Add an in-process test instead. Replace gi.repository with a stub, make Gimp.Display.new or Gimp.displays_flush raise, and call _open_image. Assert status == 'success', the image metadata, and display_opened is False. The stub must give MCPPlugin a __gtype__ attribute, because the module calls Gimp.main(MCPPlugin.__gtype__, sys.argv) at import time.

Add an in-process test for _open_image that stubs gi.repository and makes
Gimp.Display.new or Gimp.displays_flush raise. Give the MCPPlugin stub a
__gtype__ attribute for module import, then assert the result has status
"success", the expected image metadata, and display_opened is False.

Addresses CodeRabbit nitpick on PR gimp-mcp#67: no test exercised the
display-creation fallback, so a regression flipping display_opened
back to True (or turning the fallback into a hard failure) would go
unnoticed.
The test stubs gi.repository (Gimp/GLib/GObject/Gio), gives MCPPlugin
a __gtype__ for the import-time Gimp.main call, forces
Gimp.Display.new() to raise "constructor returned NULL", and asserts
status == success with correct image metadata and display_opened
False. Verified it fails on unpatched upstream main with the exact
production error and passes with the fix — no running GIMP required.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Addressed the nitpick: added tests/test_open_image_headless.py (1559182).
It runs in-process with no GIMP required: gi.repository (Gimp/GLib/GObject/Gio) is stubbed, Gimp.Display.new() is forced to raise constructor returned NULL, and the test asserts status == success, image id/dimensions/color mode, and display_opened: False.
Verified both directions: it passes on this branch with the fix, and fails on unpatched upstream main with the exact production error — so it is a genuine regression guard, not just a coverage formality.
Cover the graphical success path in the headless test.
With display_raises=False, the stub's Gimp.Display.new() returns None, and the stub has no Gimp.displays_flush(). The AttributeError from displays_flush() is caught, and the handler sets display to None. display_opened is therefore False, so the test cannot observe the True result. A regression that always reports false in graphical mode would still pass.
🧪 Suggested stub change
@staticmethod
def new(image):
if display_raises:
raise ValueError("constructor returned NULL")
- return None+ return object()
Add a second case that calls open_image with display_raises=False and asserts that display_opened is True. The existing case, which asserts False on the raising path, is not duplicated.

Review comment at @tests/test_open_image_headless.py around lines 61 - 66:
Update the headless test stubs for Gimp.Display.new and Gimp.displays_flush so
the non-raising display creation path completes successfully, then add a
separate open_image case with display_raises=False that asserts display_opened
is True; keep the existing raising-path assertion unchanged.
Add a test for a successful Display.new() followed by a failing displaysflush().
Add a test for a successful Display.new() followed by a failing displays_flush().
main() only exercises the case where Gimp.Display.new() raises. In that run, Gimp.displays_flush() is never reached. Moving that call outside the inner try would still pass this test. Add a stub mode where Display.new() returns an object and displays_flush() raises. Assert that _open_image returns status == "success" and the loaded image metadata (id 1, 320×240, "RGB").

Addresses the second CodeRabbit nitpick on PR gimp-mcp#67: the stub's
Display.new returned None and displays_flush was missing, so the
success path tripped the same fallback as the raising path and the
test could never observe display_opened True.
The stub now returns a sentinel display object and provides
no-op displays_flush(); a second case imports the plugin against it
and asserts display_opened is True. Verified: passes with the fix,
fails on the raising path (pristine upstream main), and fails on a
simulated regression that always reports False — each behavior is
individually guarded.

Addressed in the follow-up commit: Display.new now returns a sentry display object and the stub provides no-op displays_flush(), with a second case asserting display_opened: True.
Verified all three directions: success path passes, raising path (pristine upstream main) fails with the production error, and a simulated regression that always reports False is caught by the new graphical case.

Preserve the display result when only the flush fails.
If Gimp.Display.new(image) succeeds and Gimp.displays_flush() raises, this handler clears display. The response then reports display_opened: false even though a display was created. Initialize display before the try block, and retain its value in the exception handler. The GIMP 3 API distinguishes display creation from flushing UI updates. (developer.gimp.org)
