Silage

A fullscreen, couch-friendly desktop app for your Silo media server.
For Linux and Windows. Free and open source.

Why Silage

  • Full quality, no transcoding. Your files play as they are, through mpv with hardware decoding.
  • Real HDR on Linux. True HDR output on KDE Plasma, plus experimental Dolby Vision.
  • Made for the couch. Everything works with a remote or arrow keys, Enter and Esc.
  • Everything you use in Silo. Libraries, collections, watchlist, ratings, profiles, requests, notifications, subtitles, Up next, Skip Intro and Watch Together.
  • Watch offline. Download titles, episodes or whole seasons, where your server allows it.
  • Updates itself. New versions are signature-checked and installed with one click.

Install

Windows

Download Silage-Setup.exe and run it. Silage installs in seconds without administrator access and adds itself to the Start menu and desktop. Windows 10 and 11 (x64).

Linux

One command adds the Silage repository for your distro and installs it:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/evman/silage/main/install.sh | sh

Works on Ubuntu 24.04+, Debian 13, Fedora 40+ and Arch Linux. Updates then arrive with your normal system updates. Prefer to set the repository up yourself, or use another distro? See LINUX.md.

Keep mpv 0.37 or newer installed from your distro. On first launch, enter your Silo server's address and sign in.

Fullscreen or a window

Silage is made for fullscreen, and that's the best experience: it's what HDR and Dolby Vision need, and what the remote-style controls are designed around. Silage opens fullscreen on both Windows and Linux.

To use it in a window instead, press F11 at any time (or F while a video plays) to switch between fullscreen and a window. To choose how Silage opens, go to Settings → Interface → Window and pick Normal window or Fullscreen.

Upgrading from 0.4 or earlier? On Windows, install Silage-Setup.exe and sign in again; the old portable folder can then be deleted. On Linux, run the command above once to switch to the repository.

Updates

When a new version is ready, Update ready appears in the sidebar, never during playback. Select it to install and restart. You can turn automatic updates off under Settings → About.
