What

Implements the declared core functionality: maximising a consistent package set.

Dependency & conflict graphs

  • core/graph_builder.py — runtime + buildtime graphs (build_runtime_graph, build_buildtime_graph), PackageGraph/GraphBuilder, and detect_cycles.
  • Conflicts between packages and their versions are modelled on the same graph.

Solvers

  • Greedy (existing) + new backtracking solver (solvers/backtracking_solver.py).
  • Existing SAT/ILP/SMT backends (Z3, PuLP, OR-Tools, MaxSAT, MiniSat) kept.
  • core/maximizer.py — strictness handling (fail / skip / warn) for conflict resolution.

Objective

  • core/objective.py — maximise count of installable packages or summed utility/priority weight (Objective, get_default_weights).

Data loading

  • parsing/manifest_loader.py — local YAML/JSON/CSV manifests + RemoteManifestSource (HTTP/HTTPS inventory, pagination).
  • parsing/__init__.py — exports.

CLI

  • cli/main.py — manifest paths, conflict-strictness flag, report output, resource monitoring.

Monitoring

  • utils/monitor.py — psutil-based wall time / CPU / RSS snapshots (ResourceMonitor, ResourceSnapshot).

Tests

  • tests/test_edge_cases.py — cycles, unsatisfiable conflicts, empty sets, mutually exclusive versions.
  • tests/test_real_data.py + tests/golden/apt/{apache2,dnf,zypper}.json — real apt (/var/lib/dpkg/status) data.
  • tests/test_public_api.py — guards the public API surface.

Bug fix

  • _LazySolverRegistry.__getitem__ used dict.__getitem__ on a registry that starts empty, raising KeyError instead of lazily loading. The existing test only passed because another test had pre-populated the cache. Fixed with dict.get.

Verification

pytest: 99
8000
2 passed, 6 skipped
mypy (CI): Success: no issues found in 20 source files
flake8: 0 criticals (E9,F63,F7,F82)
black: clean
isort: clean
bandit: 0 medium/high

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The maximize command accepts package manifests in JSON, YAML, or CSV format alongside package names.
    • Choose how package conflicts are handled: warn, skip one conflicting package, or fail with an error. Strict mode also reports missing dependencies.
    • Save an optional JSON report with selection results and resource metrics; JSON command output suppresses log messages.
    • A backtracking solver supports count-based and weighted package selection.
    • Build runtime or build-time dependency graphs, inspect dependency order, and check serialized graphs for cycles.
    • Public APIs include manifest-loading, remote JSON manifest, objective, and resource-monitoring utilities.

Implements the declared core functionality end to end:

- Graph builder: runtime + buildtime dependency/conflict graphs with
  cycle detection (core/graph_builder.py).
- Objective: count/weighted utility maximisation (core/objective.py).
- Backtracking solver with strictness handling, plus SAT/ILP/SMT backends
  (solvers/backtracking_solver.py, strictness in core/maximizer.py).
- Manifest parsing: local YAML/JSON/CSV + remote HTTP inventory
  (parsing/manifest_loader.py).
- CLI: manifest paths, conflict-strictness flag, report output,
  resource monitoring (cli/main.py).
- Monitoring: psutil-based time/CPU/RSS snapshots (utils/monitor.py).
- Public API exports for all new modules; lazy solver registry fixed so
__getitem__ lazily loads on an empty registry instead of KeyError.
- Tests: edge cases (cycles, unsatisfiable, empty, mutually exclusive
versions), real apt data (9 golden fixtures + live dpkg), public API guard.

Verified: 992 passed, 6 skipped; mypy clean; flake8 criticals 0;
black/isort clean; bandit 0 medium/high.

Walkthrough

The package adds manifest loading, conflict strictness, a backtracking solver, graph and objective APIs, resource monitoring, and JSON reporting. It also expands public exports and adds tests and package fixtures.

Changes

Package maximization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manifest parsing and CLI inputs
package_maximizer/parsing/*, package_maximizer/cli/main.py, tests/test_manifest_loader.py
The parsing package adds lazy parser access and local and remote manifest loading. The CLI accepts repeatable manifest paths, adds parsed packages to candidate packages, and merges CLI constraints with package dependencies and conflicts.
Solver selection and conflict strictness
package_maximizer/solvers/*, package_maximizer/core/objective.py, package_maximizer/core/enums.py, package_maximizer/core/maximizer.py, tests/test_edge_cases.py, tests/test_real_data.py, tests/golden/apt/*
The backtracking solver searches for selections with satisfied dependencies and no conflicts. Objective utilities provide weight lookup. PackageMaximizer applies warn, skip, or fail strictness to solver selections. Tests and fixtures cover selection behavior and package data.
Package graphs and cycle diagnostics
package_maximizer/core/graph_builder.py, tests/test_core_graphs.py
Graph APIs build runtime and buildtime package graphs, compare version constraints, serialize graph data, and detect cycles in serialized graphs.
Resource metrics and CLI reports
package_maximizer/utils/monitor.py, package_maximizer/utils/__init__.py, package_maximizer/cli/main.py, tests/test_monitor.py
The resource monitor records timing, CPU, memory, thread, and process metrics. When --report is set, the CLI writes a JSON report with input and selection counts, results, exclusions, strictness, and resource metrics.
Public API and CLI output
package_maximizer/__init__.py, package_maximizer/parsing/__init__.py, package_maximizer/solvers/__init__.py, package_maximizer/utils/__init__.py, package_maximizer/utils/logging_config.py, package_maximizer/cli/main.py, package_maximizer/solvers/pulp_solver.py, tests/test_public_api.py, tests/test_cli_analyze_compare.py
The package exports the new APIs and registers the backtracking solver. CLI commands quiet logging for JSON output. Tests check exports and add diagnostics for JSON decoding failures.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bcc5c

This change adds manifest loading, conflict strictness, a backtracking solver, graph APIs and resource reports, but several of these behave incorrectly. The --strict option has no effect, backtracking ignores weights under the default objective, version constraints and cycle detection give wrong results, and resource metrics can be misreported. The Code Quality CI check currently fails, and the new manifest tests need an undeclared dependency. These should be resolved before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bcc5c

The advertised fail-on-conflict policy is not enforced by the CLI’s selection paths, so callers can receive inconsistent results despite requesting rejection. New network and filesystem capabilities also require trusted callers. No remotely exposed consumer or automatic installation path was established, limiting the demonstrated security impact.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: The new strictness policy is not an authoritative selection boundary. The CLI accepts and reports fail or skip but calls solve or solve_with_weights, neither of which invokes the policy validator. Only maximize validates solver output. The default greedy solver can introduce a dependency without applying that dependency’s conflicts, then select a conflicting package, so this is not limited to custom solvers. Inconsistent greedy behavior predates the PR; the introduced concern is that the newly advertised rejection policy does not contain it across public entrypoints.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new capabilities operate with the invoking process’s filesystem and network authority: local manifest reads, caller-directed HTTP requests, and report-file writes. Cross-tenant or remotely attackable exposure was not established because external consumers and their authorization boundaries are unavailable.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A manifest containing a depending on b, with b conflicting with c, can make the default greedy algorithm select all three: dependency insertion does not apply b’s conflicts. The CLI’s fail mode bypasses the post-solve validator and can publish this result while recording strictness as fail. The demonstrated outcome is a failure-containment gap in selection output, not package execution or a verified remote exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Manifest package names can reach metadata adapters when the operator enables metadata lookup. The inspected APT and pip adapters reject option-like or whitespace-containing names and invoke subprocesses with argument lists and timeouts, providing counterevidence to shell-command injection through those paths.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new skip postfilter removes selected conflict losers but checks dependency closure only in fail mode. Consequently, conflict cleanup is not itself a guarantee of a dependency-complete result.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make validation a shared result-publication boundary for weighted and unweighted entrypoints, including cached results. Preserve dependency closure after skip decisions and either make strictness immutable or include it in cache identity.
  • proposed — If these APIs are embedded in a service accepting untrusted inputs, enforce URL and redirect destination policy, response-size limits, and authorized filesystem roots at that service boundary. These are conditional safeguards, not established vulnerabilities in the current local-caller workflow.

--strict has no effect in the CLI.

The CLI passes strictness to PackageMaximizer. It then calls maximizer.solve (Line 298) or maximizer.solve_with_weights (Line 296). Neither method calls _apply_strictness. In package_maximizer/core/maximizer.py, solve returns self.solver.solve(packages) directly. Only maximize applies strictness. So --strict fail never raises, --strict skip never drops a package, and --strict warn never logs. The new tests in tests/test_real_data.py call pm.solve(...) and have the same problem. Their assertions pass without strictness being applied.

Apply strictness in solve, and in solve_with_weights as well. Note that _apply_strictness returns a sorted list.

# package_maximizer/core/maximizer.py
def solve(self, packages: Sequence[Package]) -> list[str]:
    from ..core.model_encoder import encode_packages

    package_list = list(packages)
    names = self.solver.solve(package_list)
    return self._apply_strictness(names, encode_packages(package_list))

Apply the same wrapping to the result in solve_with_weights before it is cached.

Write the report notice to stderr.

With --output json --report file, this click.echo writes a non-JSON line to stdout before the JSON document. Consumers that pipe the output to a JSON parser fail. Send the notice to stderr, as the other status messages in this command do.

Preserve all version components during comparison.

If a constraint specifies >= 1.2rc1, matches("1.1") returns True: the parser drops 2rc1 and compares (1,) with (1, 1). It also treats 1.2 and 1.2.0 as unequal under ==. Use a version parser with defined handling for these forms, or reject forms the API does not support.

Detect cycles from the serialized dependencies.

to_dict() places cycle_found at the top level, but this loop looks for it on each node. Consequently, detect_cycles() returns [] even for a serialized graph whose top-level flag is true. It also cannot diagnose a cycle before that flag has been set. Traverse the serialized depends edges and report the paths found.

solve_with_weights ignores weights with the default objective.

_build uses weights only when self.objective == "weighted". The constructor default is "count", and get_solver("backtracking") builds the solver with that default. So solve_with_weights(pkgs, {...}) maximizes package count and ignores the supplied weights. The CLI -w option and PackageMaximizer.solve_with_weights both hit this path.

Use the weights whenever the caller passes them.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

The search is exponential, and a timeout returns a poor result without a warning.

  • The search tries "skip" before "select". It has no bound pruning. Dependencies are checked only at leaves. A conflict-free set of n packages needs 2^n leaves.
  • When the time limit fires, _dfs returns silently. The best result so far comes from the early skip-heavy part of the tree, so it is usually far from optimal. The module docstring promises a greedy fallback and an optimal result. Neither exists.
  • tests/test_real_data.py solves up to 25 real packages with this solver. That is about 33M leaves, so each such test can hit the 30 s limit.
  • The recursion depth equals the package count. More than about 1000 packages raises RecursionError.

Try "select" first. Prune when score + remaining_weight <= best_score[0]. Log a warning on timeout. Optionally, seed best from GreedySolver so that a timeout never returns less than the greedy result.

Measure the interval peak before reporting peak_rss_mb.

peak_rss changes only when _safe_sample() runs. The CLI samples before and after solving. If solving releases a large allocation before the second sample, the report understates peak memory use. Sample throughout the interval or use a process high-water measurement. ResourceSnapshot.peak_rss_mb also returns only the current RSS.

Preserve the completed interval snapshot.

track() discards the result of snapshot(), which then resets the monitor. capture_monitor() does the same at Line 171. If a caller reads to_dict() from either returned monitor after the operation, it receives measurements for the time since completion, not for the operation. Retain the completed snapshot for reporting, or return it to the caller.

🟡 Minor · Revalidate dependencies after strictness="skip" removes a conflict… · maximizer.py:229-272

package_maximizer/core/maximizer.py:229-272
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Revalidate dependencies after strictness="skip" removes a conflict loser.

When app depends on b and c, and b conflicts with c, the greedy solver selects all three packages. _apply_strictness() then removes c but keeps app. PackageMaximizer.maximize() can therefore return app without its required c.

Remove selected packages whose dependencies are no longer selected, including transitive dependents.

Keep the failure handler compatible with Click 8.0–8.1.

With the default CliRunner(), Click 8.0.4 and 8.1.8 mix stdout and stderr. In those versions, accessing result.stderr raises ValueError when stderr was not captured separately, masking the JSONDecodeError. The preceding result.output print already captures the mixed output, so remove this access. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Restore the previous logging threshold.

If quiet_logging() calls are nested, the inner exit sets the threshold to NOTSET while the outer block is still active. Later diagnostics can reach stderr and break combined JSON output. The same reset also removes a threshold set before the call. Save the previous threshold on entry and restore it in finally.

Test the payload produced by PackageGraph.to_dict().

PackageGraph.to_dict() writes cycle_found at the top level, but this fixture writes it inside a node. As a result, this test passes while detect_cycles(json.dumps(graph.to_dict())) returns no cycles for a cyclic graph. Build the fixture from a cyclic PackageGraph and fix the detector to read that payload.

Use temporary paths for manifest fixtures.

If manifest.json already exists in the test working directory, this test overwrites it and then deletes it. The other fixed-name manifest tests have the same risk. Use tmp_path for each fixture path and pass that path to ManifestLoader. Based on learnings, tests that create files should use a temporary-file fixture so cleanup also works after failure.

Check the completed measurement, not a new interval.

capture_monitor() calls snapshot() before it returns. snapshot() resets the measurement baseline, and to_dict() samples again. The returned monitor therefore reports time after the callable, not time spent in it. track() discards its snapshot in the same way. These tests pass despite that incorrect result. Preserve the completed snapshot in ResourceMonitor, then assert its measured interval in these tests.
