Joshua Stewart compartilhou istoJoshua Stewart compartilhou istoIf you’ve been wondering why every GenX former-SWE you know seems to be adopting AI coding agents, the answer is simple: this is what coding felt like in the 80s and 90s! I learned to write C code in high school from a book that took you through writing a game - including the engine - from scratch. In my first jobs in the 90s and 00s, single-person “teams” wrote entire line of business apps each week in visual basic 4; the linker team at Microsoft was one person; I know two women who each were basically the entire framework architect and implementor for major OS and IDE windowing systems. And “side projects” to build your own apps or libraries or tools were within easy reach. There was a sense that any SWE could do and ship anything. Whole compilers, operating systems, games, database access frameworks... For the last 15 years or so, while I occasionally have felt nostalgia towards writing production code, the realities of the complexities of our systems and the postmortem-enhanced processes and status tracking mechanisms have soundly disabused me of that interest. Even my own evening or weekend projects became less ambitious as the stacks became more complex and the time commitments too large to casually hack. But now, I’m actually jealous of the engineers on my teams again, which is great! And, on the side - like nearly all of my GenX friends - I’m enjoying personal software development projects for the first time in a very, very long while.
