MPC: Key considerations for the SARB Our Economist, Patrick Buthelezi, highlighted the difficult balancing act facing the South African Reserve Bank's MPC committee meeting today, and for the remainder of 2026. Here are the key takeaways: ↗️ Inflation remains a concern. Headline inflation rose to 4.4% in August, while underlying inflationary pressures remain above the SARB’s 3% target. Inflation expectations matter. While recent BER data show some easing in expectations, longer-term inflation expectations remain above the 3% objective. ⤵️ Growth has weakened. South Africa’s economy contracted by 0.2% quarter on quarter in the second quarter, following six consecutive quarters of positive growth. ↕️ The MPC faces a difficult trade-off. Persistent inflation alongside weaker economic growth makes the policy decision particularly challenging – tighter monetary policy may help contain inflation but can place further pressure on economic activity. 🌐Global developments remain important. The outlook for US interest rates, alongside geopolitical developments and their potential impact on energy prices, continues to influence the domestic monetary policy environment. 📻 Buthelezi expects South Africa’s interest-rate cycle to remain relatively mild, with the MPC continuing to assess incoming inflation and growth data carefully for the rest of the year. Why losing less lets your portfolio make more The best return you'll earn this year may still be the loss you chose not to take. That is the view of Lilian Lerm, Deputy Chief Investment Officer at Sanlam Investments Multi-Manager. In this article, she explains the quiet arithmetic of compounding off a higher base: protect the floor, and the ceiling can take care of itself. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dg2v8QCt

A winning portfolio and the Springboks have much in common Portfolio construction, much like a rugby team, can benefit from adaptive thinking, along with data-led decisions as and when conditions change. Speaking to Fine Music Radio on Monday, 14 September, Willem le Roux, Portfolio Manager and Head of Multi-Asset Solutions at Sanlam Investments Multi-Manager, expanded on this analogy, saying that “every holding in a portfolio needs to earn its ‘jersey’, or its place in the team.” “We need to look at factors and combinations to increase the probability of winning and also try to make this as consistent as possible,” he said. This involves, firstly, ensuring that the assets in the portfolio complement each other and, secondly, ensuring that every holding in the portfolio is performing in its own right. “Multi-management provides access to the full playing field and that enables us to select the best ‘players’, or, in our case, underlying asset managers. Thereafter, we adapt to changing conditions to best serve our clients.” Listen to the discussion here: https://lnkd.in/dSk2vUev Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dmzSw5vY

Sanlam Alternative Investments is demonstrating how private capital can deliver both financial returns and social impact. Keamogetswe Monama, Investment Analyst at Sanlam Alternative Investments, shares how this manifests through our SME Debt strategy. A R75 million credit facility provided to affordable housing developer IndluLiving has enabled the delivery of more than 500 rental units across Gauteng townships – exceeding the original target of 351 units over two years. The investment expands access to affordable housing while supporting township property owners, local contractors, artisans and suppliers. "What makes this investment particularly meaningful is that its impact is visible on the ground. Every completed unit represents improved housing for a family, additional income for a township property owner and work opportunities for local contractors, artisans and suppliers," says Keamogetswe. Over the past 15 years, our SME Debt team has deployed R2.9 billion across more than 150 transactions, providing growth capital to underserved sectors. This is a practical example of capital working harder: creating sustainable economic opportunities for South Africans, while seeking resilient long-term value for investors. 20 Years of Partnership. And a Stronger Bet on India. What began as a partnership between Sanlam and the #ShriramGroup two decades ago has evolved into a much broader relationship, spanning wealth management, asset management and stockbroking. In this exclusive conversation recorded for The Free Press Journal, Sheryll D'Souza sits down with Carl Roothman, CEO of Sanlam Investments, to discuss this journey and why Sanlam continues to see significant long-term potential in India. Carl shares his perspective on why global investors remain bullish on #India, even at relatively elevated valuations, and how Indian markets compare with China, South Africa and other emerging economies. The conversation also touches upon some important shifts shaping the future of wealth. With Sanlam deepening its presence across the Shriram Group’s financial services businesses, the conversation offers a fascinating look at how global capital is viewing India and where the next opportunities in wealth creation could emerge. Thank you Sheryll D'Souza and team The Free Press Journal for this insightful conversation. Willem Le Roux, Head of Multi-Asset Solutions at Sanlam Investments Multi-Manager, considers how continuous, adaptive learning can pay off for investors and the Springboks alike.
Lessons from the Springboks: A new approach to diversification Rassie Erasmus doesn't field the biggest names and hope they click. He builds a side that works as a system. That is exactly how Willem le Roux, Head of Multi-Asset Solutions at Sanlam Investments Multi-Manager thinks investors should approach a portfolio. (Read more about Sanlan Investments Multi-Manager here: https://lnkd.in/dJJ6zqhR) "An asset class can look excellent on its own and still be the wrong fit for the strategy on the whole," says Le Roux. "Our job is to understand what each part can deliver, and how the parts behave together when markets are calm, volatile or under pressure." Three takeaways from his analysis: – The old playbook is not enough. For decades, equities drove growth and bonds provided the buffer. That relationship has become less reliable. South African government bonds, for instance, can be treated as emerging-market risk assets by global investors. When risk appetite dries up, local shares and bonds can sell off together. – A pie chart is not a game plan. Genuine diversification means owning assets for different reasons and understanding how each exposure behaves alongside the rest. "Every holding has to earn its jersey," says Le Roux. A portfolio can look beautifully diversified on paper and still be driven by one or two underlying risks quietly calling the shots. – Play the long game. Rassie doesn't treat every match as a referendum on the whole plan. He takes a setback, learns from it and keeps building towards the bigger prize. Investors benefit from the same discipline. An over-fixation on month-to-month returns can take your eye off the ultimate goal. As Le Roux puts it: "More attacking does not have to mean reckless. A balanced rugby side can attack because it knows where the cover is." Read the full feature on the MoneyMarketing website. #Diversification #Investing #SanlamInvestmentsMultiManager

Resources drive South African markets higher South African markets ended the week broadly positive, driven largely by resources. Speaking to SABC News on Friday, 4 September, Willem Le Roux, Portfolio Manager and Head of Multi-Asset Solutions at Sanlam Investments Multi-Manager, said that gold was being driven higher by growing expectations of a more dovish US interest rate outlook. On the potential for a longer-term upswing in commodities, Willem added, “In the context of the amount of spending on AI infrastructure … one shouldn’t underestimate the demand that creates for commodities.” Listen to the discussion here: https://lnkd.in/dURYtKXC
