Offshore investing is not a box to tick. It's a set of decisions that all need to work together. For most South African clients, investing offshore is rarely about a single goal, says Eugene Taljaard, Regional Manager at Momentum Wealth International. It combines diversification, risk management and the need to structure wealth effectively for long-term wealth creation and intergenerational transfer. One of the strongest behavioural drivers is home bias, which is the tendency to favour familiar local markets. In a South African context, that often results in portfolios concentrated in a relatively small opportunity set. Investing offshore directly addresses this by widening exposure across geographies, asset classes, sectors and companies that aren't accessible locally. Momentum Wealth International accommodates different ways for clients to externalise capital, from personal offshore allowances to prudential limit capacity provider arrangements for trusts, companies or individuals who have already used their allowances. Two core solutions are on offer: the Global Wealth Investment, which is simpler in structure and gives clients flexible access to their money, and the Global Wealth Endowment, built for longevity and legacy, with a wider range of succession features for intergenerational planning. For advisers, the key is to anchor each step in the client's objective. Your car. Your home. Your savings. What does it really mean to own them? In recognition of Wills Month, Discovery Limited is exploring a simple but important question: what does it really mean to own something? Many South Africans work hard to build assets, grow their savings and create financial security. But true ownership means taking responsibility for the asset while you're alive, and choosing what happens to it after you've passed away. Many young professionals are part of the sandwich generation, balancing the responsibility of supporting parents while building their own futures and caring for the next generation. As these responsibilities grow and ownership expands, so does the importance of making clear decisions about what you've built. A Will expresses these decisions of ownership, and getting one is easy. To further educate advisers and clients on the important elements of estate planning, Discovery is hosting a webinar on the MoneyMarketing YouTube channel. Kashmeera Kanji, Head of Distribution Strategy and Market Analytics, and Zinhle Sithole, Testamentary Specialist with Discovery Wills and Trusts Services, discuss the importance of ensuring a Will is firmly in place. In this episode, the following will be discussed: -Why ownership is about decisions, not just possessions -Why financial responsibility starts earlier than many people realise -The role a valid Will plays in ensuring your wishes are carried out -The realities of being part of the sandwich generation -Why getting a Will is one of the simplest ways to take ownership of your financial future A Will is one of the simplest ways to take control of what you've built. With Discovery, you can get a Will drafted at no cost to ensure your wishes are carried out. This Wills Month, take a moment to consider whether you've made the decisions that true ownership requires. Disability cover does an essential job of replacing an income when someone can no longer work. But too often, it falls short of the people it's meant to protect. The first problem is cost. Income protection is among the most expensive types of cover in group risk, and premiums climb with age, occupation and claims history. When budgets tighten, it is one of the first benefits an employer trims. The second is the claims gauntlet. Submitting a disability claim is rarely as simple as a doctor's note. It can mean months of waiting, layers of medical and functional assessment, and repeated reassessments even after a claim is admitted. The third is the definition of disability itself. Traditional benefits pay out only if the member cannot perform their own occupation or any alternative their training suits them for. A skilled person who cannot continue in their own job, but could in theory do another, may not qualify at all. None of this is a criticism of disability cover. It remains vital for the purpose it serves. But because it is designed around a person's ability to earn, there is one thing it was never built to do: respond to the loss itself. When an employee permanently loses a sense or a physical ability, that loss is life-changing regardless of whether they can still work. It is precisely this need that traditional cover was never meant to address. That thinking led Fedgroup to build something different. Inability Cover is a standalone, industry-first benefit that pays a lump sum when an employee loses an essential sense or physical ability through illness, injury or disease. It is not linked to whether the person can still work. It focuses on the loss itself. For brokers, that changes the conversation. Instead of explaining to an employer why a member's claim was declined on a technicality, you can offer standalone cover that pays on a clear event. It's simpler to explain, place and honour. The September issue of MoneyMarketing is now available! In this issue, we look at how the fundamentals of good financial advice remain constant: helping clients make informed decisions, protect what they have built, and plan with confidence for the future. Lessons from the Springboks: A new approach to diversification Rassie Erasmus doesn't field the biggest names and hope they click. He builds a side that works as a system. That is exactly how Willem le Roux, Head of Multi-Asset Solutions at Sanlam Investments Multi-Manager thinks investors should approach a portfolio. (Read more about Sanlan Investments Multi-Manager here: https://lnkd.in/dJJ6zqhR) "An asset class can look excellent on its own and still be the wrong fit for the strategy on the whole," says Le Roux. "Our job is to understand what each part can deliver, and how the parts behave together when markets are calm, volatile or under pressure." Three takeaways from his analysis: – The old playbook is not enough. For decades, equities drove growth and bonds provided the buffer. That relationship has become less reliable. South African government bonds, for instance, can be treated as emerging-market risk assets by global investors. When risk appetite dries up, local shares and bonds can sell off together. – A pie chart is not a game plan. Genuine diversification means owning assets for different reasons and understanding how each exposure behaves alongside the rest. "Every holding has to earn its jersey," says Le Roux. A portfolio can look beautifully diversified on paper and still be driven by one or two underlying risks quietly calling the shots. – Play the long game. Rassie doesn't treat every match as a referendum on the whole plan. He takes a setback, learns from it and keeps building towards the bigger prize. Investors benefit from the same discipline. An over-fixation on month-to-month returns can take your eye off the ultimate goal. As Le Roux puts it: "More attacking does not have to mean reckless. A balanced rugby side can attack because it knows where the cover is." Read the full feature on the MoneyMarketing website. #Diversification #Investing #SanlamInvestmentsMultiManager

South Africa's employee benefits industry has grown comfortable with traditional definitions of disability – definitions that can leave workers financially exposed when serious injury or illness permanently changes what they are able to do. Fedgroup is first to market with its Inability Cover benefit, a new category of employee protection designed specifically for South African conditions and built to address the gap between critical illness and conventional disability cover. The benefit is particularly relevant to sectors where physical capability is closely tied to earning capacity – mining, manufacturing, engineering, construction, security and agriculture. As Fedgroup Life CEO Walter van der Merwe puts it: "We saw people who had permanently lost physical functionality, whose working lives had materially changed, but who received nothing because they were not considered disabled." Rather than focusing primarily on occupation, Inability Cover assesses defined permanent loss of function. It covers specified sensory losses involving sight, speech and hearing, and physical functions including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and carrying, and the use of an arm or hand. Fedgroup estimates it will be around 50% cheaper on average than capital disability cover, and the benefit can be paid over six months rather than exclusively as a single lump sum. For South Africa's real economy, where millions of livelihoods remain connected to what people are physically able to do, the distinction between disability and inability is not semantic. It is an economic one. Read more here: https://brnw.ch/21x5rM3 #EmployeeBenefits #InabilityCover #SouthAfrica #MoneyMarketingSA #IndustryFirst #Fedgroup

South African employers are discovering that employee wellbeing can no longer be siloed as a human resources concern. The businesses that thrive will be those that treat their people as the foundation of sustainable performance rather than a line item to be managed. Four themes are shaping the conversation. AI adoption is changing the wellbeing landscape. According to BCG's AI at Work research, 72% of South African employees now use AI regularly, placing the country among the world's leading adopters. While 67% of regular users report higher job satisfaction, 41% also experience increased mental strain. Glenn Simpson, Client Services Manager at Lyra Southern Africa, says sustainable performance requires balancing technological capability with human judgement, empathy and trust. Absenteeism remains one of the biggest hidden costs facing South African businesses, estimated at more than R20bn annually. Rene Richter, Reward and Benefits Lead Advisor at Paymenow Group, believes financial stress is a major but often overlooked driver. Earned wage access is one solution – Paymenow's 2026 Impact Performance Report found that 88% of users reported lower financial stress and 94% said their quality of life had improved. Employee mental health has also become a measurable business and insurance risk. Ryno de Kock, Head of Distribution at PSG Wealth Insure, warns that poor mental health can directly affect workplace performance and increase exposure to costly insurance claims. "Mental health is a business continuity, operational and governance risk," he says. And employee benefits have the potential to do far more than attract and retain talent. Fikile Matabane, Executive: Employee Benefits at ASI Financial Services, believes benefits are one of the most powerful corporate levers available for closing the wealth gap. "When an employee has adequate retirement provision, they are securing their own future and freeing their children from the burden of supporting them in old age. That freedom is capital."
