Texas Poppies, the local chapter of National Charity League, opened its 2026-2027 year with a goal of 3,655 combined mother-daughter volunteer hours across six area communities, including The Woodlands. The chapter partners with organizations like Sleep In Heavenly Peace, Montgomery Community Assistance Center, and Interfaith of The Woodlands, and closes its fall calendar with an October Holiday Fair supporting those partners. An important reminder of what trusteeship actually means. I found this Charity Commission case particularly thought-provoking. Being a trustee isn’t simply about attending Board meetings, supporting the work of a charity or bringing professional expertise to the table. It also means being willing to ask questions, understand the information in front of you and exercise appropriate scrutiny — particularly when it comes to financial sustainability. What stood out to me in this case was the finding that there had been an overreliance on the executive team for financial decision-making. Delegation is necessary in any well-run organisation, but delegation isn’t the same as transferring accountability. A strong relationship between a Board and its executive team should still leave room for challenge, curiosity and constructive questioning. And financial oversight shouldn’t sit solely with the Treasurer or the trustee who happens to have the strongest finance background. Trustees have a collective responsibility for the stewardship of their charity. For me, good governance isn’t about trustees trying to become operational managers. It’s about understanding enough to ask the right questions, recognising when more information or expertise is needed, and making decisions collectively with the charity’s long-term interests in mind.
