It was great to welcome The Lighthouse Charity and their #MakeItVisible team to The Poppies construction site for an important talk around welfare, wellbeing and the support available to everyone working within our industry. The session was a valuable reminder that looking after people on site goes far beyond physical safety. Mental health, financial pressures and personal challenges can affect any of us, and knowing where to turn for confidential support can make a real difference. A big thank you to the Lighthouse team for taking the time to visit and speak openly with everyone on site, and also to all of the workforce who attended and engaged with the session. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout from across the site. Initiatives like Make It Visible help break down barriers, start conversations and make sure people know that support is there when they need it. If one conversation helps one person reach out for support, it’s a conversation worth having. It was an honor to attend The Lighthouse Charity ball last night, celebrating 70 years of their invaluable work. The support they provide—mental, emotional, and financial—to those across our industry is nothing short of essential. Hearing their story and reflecting on the impact they’ve had over the last seven decades was a humbling experience. The reality we face remains sobering: two construction workers lose their lives to suicide every single day. This statistic is a stark reminder of the immense pressures within our industry and the urgent need for us to continue prioritising open, honest conversations about wellbeing. A great night at the North East Annual Dinner in Newcastle last night! 🥂 This year was a particularly special one as we celebrate 70 years of The Lighthouse Charity. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces, as well as some new ones. Lovely to spend the evening with Sarah Sidey, Helen Hutchinson, Ray Elliott and Sam Warner and what a surprise it was when they were recognised with an award for their work across the North East and the wider UK and Ireland. They do a brilliant job of championing positive wellbeing in construction, sharing their own experiences and stories, and encouraging people to reach out for support when they need it. We were also delighted to have some of our Lighthouse International Ambassadors join us, travelling all the way from Asia to celebrate with us. Great to see John Battersby FCInstCES, FCIOB, FHKICM, MRICS, MHKIS make the trip over especially. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a great evening. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the East Anglian Lighthouse Gala Dinner, celebrating the Lighthouse Charity's 70th Anniversary. As the lead sponsor of the event, AtkinsRéalis were proud to support an organisation that makes a real difference to the lives of people across the construction industry. It was an inspiring evening that highlighted both the scale of the charity's impact and the importance of continuing to break down barriers around mental health and wellbeing. Hearing about the support provided to workers and their families was a powerful reminder that people must always remain at the heart of what we do. It was also great to hear from Gordon Riddoch on the importance of supporting initiatives such as these and the positive impact they have across our industry.
