Ariane 6 flies its first GTO mission with MTG-I2! On 27 August 2026 at 17:11 local time (20:11 UTC), an Ariane 62 lifted off from ELA-4 at Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The two-booster Ariane 6 configuration used a pair of P120C solid motors and a Vinci upper stage to send a single payload toward geostationary transfer orbit. The payload was MTG-I2, also known as Meteosat-14, the second imager in EUMETSAT’s Meteosat Third Generation system. Built by Thales Alenia Space for EUMETSAT with ESA, it carries a Flexible Combined Imager and a Lightning Imager. Arianespace said the satellite was injected into GTO and separated about 36 minutes after liftoff. It will later circularise into geostationary orbit at about 36,000 km. This was Ariane 6’s ninth flight, its sixth in the Ariane 62 configuration, Arianespace’s fourth launch of 2026, and the rocket’s first mission to GTO. Once operational, MTG-I2 will scan Europe and North Africa every 2.5 minutes, twice as often as the previous-generation rapid-scan service, with high-resolution channels down to about 500 metres. That cadence is meant to give forecasters earlier views of fast-developing storms, hail, damaging winds, flash floods, and wildfires. It joins Meteosat-12 and MTG-S1 to complete the first three-satellite MTG constellation in orbit. Time for the last tango 💃 The final two of ESA's in total four Cluster spacecraft will end their journey. The two satellites, Samba and Tango, will burn up in our atmosphere. The satellites spent more than 20 years in space and were protected during that time by thermal insulation from us against the extreme temperatures in space. Live Blog from ESA 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUbpQ8sH Cluster was a constellation of four spacecraft investigating the interaction between the Sun and Earth’s magnetosphere in unparalleled detail. Officially, the Cluster mission ended in 2024 with the planned re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere of the first of the four satellites. The initial first four Cluster satellites were also the first ESA satellites to be equipped with thermal protection by Beyond Gravity. We have been active in the field of satellite thermal protection for 35 years. More about Cluster I (which was succeeded by the current Cluster II mission) 👉 https://lnkd.in/dk9_YYAd Image credit: European Space Agency - ESA / David Ducross

🚀 🛰️ 🛰️ A night to remember at ESOC. Explore the highlights of ESA's dual launch operations. On 15 September, European Space Agency - ESA mission control pulled off an unusual operational challenge: guiding two different spacecraft through their critical first hours in orbit at the same time. ESA’s FLEX Earth Explorer and Copernicus Sentinel-3C launched together aboard the same Vega-C rocket. But at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), they were flown by two independent mission teams operating in parallel. That meant two flight control teams. Two flight dynamics teams. Two ground operations teams. Two sets of critical decisions – all working side by side and coordinating where their operations, resources and spacecraft trajectories intersected. For both teams, one of the most anticipated moments came with acquisition-of-signal (AOS), the spacecraft's first contact with Earth and ESA mission control at ESOC: 📡✅🛰️ Sentinel-3C: 4:32 CEST 📡✅🛰️ FLEX: 5:22 CEST Coordinating two independent mission operations teams around a shared launcher timeline and countdown added a unique dimension to the campaign. “Teams at ESOC have launched other missions with multiple satellites, like Swarm, but this is the first time that the two missions have been prepared and designed to be launched with separate flight operations segments," said Elia Maestroni, Flight Operations Director for FLEX. From countdown to first signal acquisition, follow the story of a remarkable night at ESA mission control.⬇️ #ESA #Copernicus #Sentinel3C #FLEX #ESOC #SpaceOps #WhereMissionsComeAlive #avio #vegac #vv30 🎥ESA
