- The months before high school graduation were hard. My parents struggled financially. I attended private school and they started sending notices that without full payment I wouldn't be allowed to walk in graduation. And I was okay with it, but then it was resolved and seemed to just go away. I didn't think too much about it until one day one of my heroes and my favorite high school teacher, Gail, died during my freshman year of college. I spoke at her funeral and afterwards one of the teachers shared how much Gail loved me and believed in me. They told me something I never knew. When Gail heard the school wouldn't allow me to walk in graduation because of their payment policy, she said she wouldn't walk and then she organized the teachers to follow suit.
