The challenge is this: How do you make good, repeatable decisions when the data only take you part of the way? Every executive faces high-stakes strategic calls that must be made under real uncertainty. And sure it’s a bit trite at this point, but very true - data and analysis can inform decisions, but sometimes, especially for the most important decisions, human judgment is where the differentiator sits. Baseball is no exception. Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management wrote about the current state of my work so far (thanks for writing this, Claire Zulkey), so feel free to take a look. Claire Zulkey reacted on thisClaire Zulkey reacted on thisRichard Rushfield set up The Ankler in 2016 and was told it was an awful idea, as nobody was going to pay for a newsletter. Turns out they were wrong - very wrong. I absolutely loved this interview with Richard Rushfield, who, alongside Janice Min, has turned The Ankler into one of the most influential voices covering the media and entertainment industries. Speaking to Claire Zulkey for Dan Oshinsky's Inbox Collective, Rushfield explains how The Ankler grew from a one-person newsletter into a hugely successful media business. There was no initial growth deck or investor pitch, and no grand strategy. Instead the newsletter grew through word of mouth and Rushfield is really strong on how important his first readers were, becoming powerful advocates for the product. I also really liked his explanation of success and emphasis on the importance of talent. He argues that the best newsletter operators have a rare, but valuable, combination of deep expertise, distinctive voice and entrepreneurial mindset and told Zulkey: "We have a hundred ideas for 'a newsletter about this would be good,' but the person who can actually do it has to know everything about that field and they can’t just write about it like everyone else who writes about it. They have to have the knowledge of a reporter who comes from it, but they also have to have a voice." Amen to that!
