𝗣𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 CTO 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗹 points to a specific advantage: a new generation of engineers he calls "AI natives," graduates who grew up building with modern AI tools rather than adapting to them later, many coming out of ETH Zürich. Stay tuned as the team continues diving in!Andrew Mitry liked thisBig news: Perforated works on language models, and we just proved it. Large Language Models are driving over $1T per year in spend. That got us thinking . . . how far can perforation push LLM performance? If we achieve similar efficiency gains to what we’ve demonstrated on other types of models (70%+), it could mean hundreds of billions of dollars in savings. Worth looking into. To test it, we turned to Andrej Karpathy's nanoGPT. nanoGPT is an ideal use case: small enough to iterate on quickly, but with the same qualities and challenges as the models driving the industry. We ran experiments on the TinyStories dataset. Our goal was to see if we could reduce training time and reach a similar validation loss on the same architecture while adding minimal parameters to the best portions of the model. And it worked right out of the gate. With minimal changes to our training settings, we reduced training cost by 35% with only a 2.7% parameter increase. We’re continuing experimentation to see exactly how far we can push performance for nanoGPT, and we’ll share more updates in ensuing posts. If these preliminary results are an indicator, perforation could transform the economics of the entire industry. #nanoGPT #perforation #MachineLearning #AI #ModelCompression #MLOps

We are a group of citizens who assembled at the Pittsburgh Civic Hackathon to make it easier to get vaccinated against Covid-19 in PA. We had recognized significant usability challenges in the state's official web platform.

Amazon Web Services is the first cloud provider to make Anthropic's new Claude Sonnet 4.5 model available. Launched September 29 in Amazon Bedrock, Claude Sonnet 4.5 introduces state-of-the-art performance in coding, reasoning, and agentic workflows. The release builds on AWS's strategic investment in Anthropic, giving Bedrock users early access to the latest Claude model. Developers can use the model through Bedrock's unified API and AgentCore to build production-ready agents with enterprise-grade security, context management, and observability. AWS just announced Graviton4 support for OpenSearch. My honest take? Stay where you are. I know that sounds counterintuitive. For years, upgrading to the new generation was the obvious FinOps move. When c5 came out, it was about 20% cheaper than c4, with improved performance. New generation meant automatic savings. That was the deal. That deal is gone. Here's what Graviton4 actually costs you on OpenSearch today vs Graviton3: m7g.xlarge → m8g.xlarge: $0.271 → $0.299 (+10%) r7g.xlarge → r8g.xlarge: $0.356 → $0.392 (+10%) c7g.xlarge → c8g.xlarge: $0.241 → $0.265 (+10%) AWS claims up to 30% better performance. Maybe true. But here's the question worth asking: do you actually need 30% more performance from your OpenSearch cluster right now for a 10% increase in costs? If the answer is no, skipping this upgrade is a double win. You keep paying the lower price, and you skip the migration work, testing cycles, and risk that comes with any infrastructure change. Cloud vendors used to compete on price between generations. Now they compete on performance - and they're charging you for it. That's a fundamental shift in how we should think about upgrades. The new default shouldn't be "upgrade when available." It should be "upgrade when your workload justifies it." Staying on Graviton3 isn't falling behind.
