  • Our team members recently came together in Chicago for a collaborative training session focused on learning, knowledge sharing, and professional development. The session provided a great opportunity for everyone to connect, exchange perspectives, and learn from one another while strengthening relationships with those that don’t work together on a daily basis.

  • ☑️ Commercial teams struggle to articulate value of service? ☑️ Pricing still revolves around products? ☑️ Systems built decades ago no longer suited for more complicated customer relationships? As Nick Scarlett highlights, becoming a value-added solutions provider requires more than a change in strategy. Pricing, commercial capabilities, operations and systems must all evolve to support the new value proposition. Read Nick’s thoughts on why a confusing invoice may be an early sign that a company’s ambitions have moved ahead of its ability to execute.

Customers hate our invoices. We hear this surprisingly often from industrial clients. It sounds like a billing problem, but I’ve come to think it’s often a signal of something much bigger. Many industrial businesses were built to manufacture, inventory, sell, and ship SKUs. Their ERP systems, processes, commercial teams, and metrics were all designed around products. But their strategies have evolved. They want to move up the value chain: adding services, engineering support, managed inventory, data, or other solutions that deepen customer relationships and improve margins. Often, they can point to a handful of their best customers where this is already working. The challenge is scaling it. The value proposition changes, but the selling motion doesn’t. Pricing still revolves around products. Commercial teams struggle to articulate the value of the service. Operations aren’t designed to deliver it consistently. And systems built decades ago to move widgets now have to somehow explain a much more complicated customer relationship. Which brings us back to the invoice. A confusing invoice can be a canary in the coal mine: evidence that the company’s aspiration has evolved faster than its ability to execute. Becoming a value-added solutions provider isn’t just a strategy. It requires the rest of the business to catch up. #Manufacturing #CommercialStrategy #Servitization

  • AI will make good strategy more accessible. But if every company has access to similar tools and insights, what will separate the winners? Cyrus Patel, Partner and Managing Director of TRC Advisory, identifies four potential sources of advantage: proprietary data, advanced AI models, the judgment to diverge from consensus and the discipline to execute. In this article, Cyrus explores why AI convergence could make independent thinking and strong execution more valuable than ever. What will create lasting competitive advantage in the age of AI?

If everyone has access to the same AI tools, do we all eventually converge on the same business strategies?   The question came from an unexpected place. I was listening to a podcast about AI-generated fiction, which is now competing with and beating human writers for literary awards. The discussion was not really about the quality of AI-generated writing, but whether it might make writing more homogeneous over time. It made me wonder whether the same thing could happen in business strategy.   My perspective is that an edge in data or AI capability can create an advantage, but in most cases, it will not be enduring. What's a breakthrough today becomes table stakes tomorrow.   The lasting advantage is not the AI itself, but the judgment to know when to follow its recommendations and the conviction to depart from them.   And ultimately, execution still wins. Insights and ideas are becoming abundant, but the ability to consistently turn them into results remains scarce.

  • This past week, five TRC Advisory colleagues attended Elixirr’s Indaba in the English countryside outside London, marking the second Indaba since TRC became part of Elixirr. As one of the participants Daniel Taub reflects: "The event gave us the opportunity to work through multiple client simulations with colleagues from across Elixirr’s business units and capabilities, highlighting the breadth of expertise now available across the combined firm. As we used various AI tools throughout the simulations, one concept was reinforced again and again: AI can create volume, but humans provide the judgment needed to shape, challenge, and apply it in ways that matter for clients."

  • At TRC Advisory, we often move quickly from one priority to the next. But taking time to train the team is one of the most practical ways to improve quality, confidence, and delivery. As part of our annual firm meeting last week, we gathered with our interns, associates, and new hire class to go through the fundamentals of our consulting practice, the technical skills needed, and project case studies that helped connect theory with practical application. Investing in our people remains one of the best investments we can make. Thanks to our trainers and colleaugues behind the scenes Roberta Gentile, Matthew Eliason, Janis Beikmanis, CFA, Patrick Lelich, Anthony (A.J.) Sadler, and Brenden Ryan.
