🦦How do we restore and steward kelp forests? 🌊The answer involves more than ecology alone. Kelp forests are among the most important coastal ecosystems on Earth, supporting marine biodiversity, fisheries, coastal communities, and climate resilience. Yet many kelp ecosystems are declining faster than restoration efforts can keep pace. 🦋 As part of the Morpho Initiative, this NCEAS working group brought together researchers, artists, storytellers, practitioners, and diverse knowledge holders to explore how kelp stewardship and restoration efforts can better incorporate Indigenous knowledge, local expertise, and place-based approaches. The team recently completed its final working group meeting and is now developing: 📖 Guidance on equitable approaches to kelp restoration 🗺️ A kelp forest site-selection tool that considers both ecological and social factors 🌿 Recommendations for restoration efforts that are responsive to local conditions and community priorities 🌎 An artistic StoryMap connecting Indigenous kelp-connected storytelling across oceans By weaving together multiple knowledge systems, the group aims to foster more resilient and context-respectful approaches to kelp stewardship. 👉Swipe through to learn more about the project. One question we are looking to answer... 🐟 How do estuarine habitat restoration projects impact fisheries? As part of the #GulfEcosystemInitiative, an NCEAS working group is bringing together decades of restoration and fisheries research to help answer this question. The team recently completed its final working group meeting and is now developing several products, including: 📚 A literature review examining trends in estuarine restoration and how fisheries outcomes are measured in Florida 🗺️ A new Florida estuarine restoration database documenting hundreds of restoration projects spanning more than 20 years 💻 An interactive dashboard that will allow users to explore restoration efforts across the state and more! 🐟 By synthesizing existing knowledge and making restoration data more accessible, the project aims to support future research, restoration planning, and climate-resilient management across Gulf estuaries.
