Yesterday, the GreenALot team hit the banks of the Apies River alongside the Department of Water and Sanitation for a crucial cleanup. 🌊 With the broader Pretoria metropolitan area home to roughly 3.5 million people, our urban waterways face immense pressure. The biggest culprit we saw firsthand? Consumer goods packaging—the single largest source of plastic pollution choking up our river systems. While pulling waste from the river is a necessary step, the conversations on the ground highlighted the real solution. As Samuel Kumbayi from Plastics SA noted, "True change means we have to stop this packaging waste at the source." Deputy Minister Dr. Bloom expanded on this perfectly, emphasizing that managing packaging right in our homes is a lifeline for our waterways. In a water-scarce country like South Africa, giving households practical, accessible options to return packaging isn't just nice to have—it is critical.
