What a week! After three months of intensive business development support and pitch refinement, we’re thrilled to have won the Challenger Digital and Green Awards, funded by Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) and implemented by Civitta and GrowthAfrica A huge thank you to the incredible teams at Civitta and GrowthAfrica for the opportunity to sharpen both our business model and storytelling. We’re especially grateful to our mentor, Gertrud Karu, for her dedication and the invaluable guidance she poured into Arinifu. We are deeply humbled and honored by this recognition and even more excited about the partnerships and opportunities this milestone will unlock.

It’s been 2 weeks, and the chicks at Wanjiku's farm are thriving. The numbers tell it all: 1.7% mortality rate. Average weight 526g, higher than the 480g average over the same period. The gas cylinder still has about 28kg left from what was expected. The farmhand is a happy chap—not stressed, not overworked. No antibiotics needed, since the birds are doing well. Their next step later that day was to increase floor space for better bird comfort All this is possible from a combination of clean heating, ensuring birds have the least carbon exposure, and automation from the Smart Brooder, which guides the farmer on how to manage heating and airflow/ventilation for optimal chick performance. In Kabati, Murang’a County lies Wanjiku's farm. Our team supported her every step of the way, from installing the Smart Brooder sensors automatically clean heaters, to assisting with chick placement. Brooding involves supplying young chicks with heat since their thermoregulatory system is not well developed at birth. It is the most crucial stage in poultry rearing, determining whether you make or break the season as a farmer. It was a delight to watch the chicks happily leave their transport boxes and explore a climate-controlled brooding space designed to give them the best start in life. The automated LPG heating system not only eases Wanjiku’s workload but also significantly reduces the risk of chick mortality, with expected mortality of less than 3%, unlike traditional charcoal systems where it often rises to over 40%. This is what modern, smart poultry farming looks like; less stress, 20% more efficient, safer, and 25% more profitable. Tell a poultry farmer to tell a poultry farmer: the hard days are gone, and there is no need to fear keeping day-old chicks anymore. What an exciting day for our team at Wambui’s farm in Makuyu, Murang’a County. We spent the morning with the chicks and walked through the daily rhythm of managing a poultry farm. We were pleased to host Ruth and Scholar from Acumen Fund, together with Jeremy from the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program, for a courtesy visit that offered a true firsthand look at on the ground realities. They observed how our Smart Brooder technology and clean energy heaters are helping farmers cut costs, reduce stress, and keep chicks healthier transforming what was once a tough, sleep depriving process. They also got to understand the real hustles of charcoal heating, the kind you simply cannot capture in words alone. It was a fun and eye opening visit that underscored both the challenges farmers face and the powerful impact the right technology can deliver.

In one of the coldest regions of Kenya—Limuru—Vincent and his wife are nurturing a small-scale poultry farm with big aspirations.
