  • In the final keynote of this year’s Digital Wallet Seminar, Eric Vétillard from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) explored the challenges of certifying the EUDI Wallet. He explained that certification must navigate a myriad of regulatory frameworks and assurance models governing identity and cybersecurity across Europe. He acknowledged that the process is complex and still maturing, but stressed that “certification is a well-paved road.” Formal structures provide a solid foundation for innovation, he said, but shortcuts will only delay progress. The encouraging news is that member states and the broader ecosystem are collaborating closely to bring EUDI Wallet certifications to life.

Latest keynote from the Digital Wallet Seminar: Lauren Del Giudice of the European Central Bank (ECB) outlined the vision for the Digital Euro as the project moves into a new phase after two years of preparation. She noted that Europe’s payments market remains fragmented and heavily dependent on international card schemes (ICS). To address these issues, the Digital Euro aims to strengthen Europe’s payment sovereignty through two complementary modes—online and offline—designed to ensure resilience, accessibility, and universal usability. Del Giudice emphasized that privacy is a key differentiator, with offline “proximity” payments delivering cash-like privacy through secure hardware. These transactions will occur in devices using Trusted Execution Environments (TEE), but only through the use of secure elements, embedded Secure Elements (eSE), eSIM, smart cards and some secure envlaves when high security has been achieved.

  • A full house in Brussels for David Zeuthen’s keynote on Google’s digital credentials strategy at the GlobalPlatform Digital Wallet Seminar. He highlighted Google’s long history as an identity provider and credential issuer, noting that digital identity is among the most requested features in Google Wallet. Zeuthen described how Google is advancing open standards and open-source collaboration through initiatives like Multipaz and the new Digital Credentials API for online presentation. He emphasized Google’s three-pillar approach of standardization, open source, and productization to ensure interoperability, privacy, and security, adding that Android and Chrome are now fully ready for digital credentials.

  • Paolo De Rosa, CTO of EUDI Wallet at the European Commission, delivered the opening keynote at the GlobalPlatform Digital Wallet Seminar in Brussels this morning. He updated attendees on progress towards introduction of the European Union Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, including the announcement of €150 million in new funding for wallet developments and certifications. He added that the EUDI Wallet—scheduled to arrive next year—would position Europe as a global leader in digital identity, payments, and data exchange—and would eventually be powered by Secure Elements embedded in devices. “Europe’s next digital decade runs on identity and identity runs on hardware,” he said.
