The human cost of this El Niño will be devastating - with more than 450,000 additional heat-related deaths projected worldwide over six months. Older people will be among those on the frontline. Extreme heat can worsen existing health conditions, while a lifetime of poverty, disability, gender inequality and unequal access to healthcare can leave older people with fewer ways to protect themselves. This is not a new warning – global heating is already a huge challenge, but the impacts are escalating. Our briefings on climate-resilient health systems and age-inclusive social protection have shown what governments need to do. We already know the risks. Anticipatory action must connect resilient health services and practical financial support, such as cash assistance and pensions, providing protection for older people before a climate shock becomes a crisis. I was struck by the optimism & boldness of Kirsty McNeill MP speech, particularly her emphasis on our shared humanity, incl. "We want to stop atrocities because they are atrocious. No other motivation is required." Her rejection of "us & them" narratives resonated. Age International’s work with older people shows that the experiences that unite us are far greater than the differences that divide us (credit to Jo Cox). Older people across the world want the same things as everyone else: dignity, respect, safety and equality. Our world is ageing rapidly, so older people are central to the five ‘securities’ the Minister outlined. We work to ensure that older people are integrated into FCDO work on: - gender equality and violence against women and girls - responding to & mitigating climate & humanitarian crises - upholding the rights of those most in need - ensuring people of all ages can access healthcare - creating economic opportunities for all. Age International welcomes the Government’s support for a new UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons, & we hope the Government will incorporate discussion of ageing as an opportunity for resilient economic growth within its Presidency of the G20 in 2027.

One year ago today, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory concluded that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Yet Palestinians continue to be killed and injured, most of Gaza’s population remains displaced, and restrictions on food, water, medicines, fuel and humanitarian operations continue. For older people, especially those with disabilities, chronic health conditions or limited mobility, disrupted healthcare and the loss of accessible shelter, assistive products, carers and family support can be life-threatening. The UK Government’s announcement on 8 September regarding Gaza and the West Bank marked an important shift. This must now translate into sustained action to protect Palestinians and humanitarian workers, uphold international law, and secure full, safe and unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza. Any effective response must protect the rights and dignity of people of all ages, with older people fully included. https://lnkd.in/ex_SzVEN

People around the world are living longer. But this does not always mean living in good health. Older people face barriers to healthcare, financial insecurity and a lack of support - preventing them from living healthy, dignified and independent lives. The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) was launched to address these challenges. We are now at the halfway point, and world leaders are meeting at the UN General Assembly later this month to review progress. Change is happening, but not fast enough. And awareness of the issues facing older people remains low, especially in countries where the need is greatest. Age International is calling on the UK Government to show leadership at this critical moment, strengthening the links between its commitments on healthy ageing at home and its international development, humanitarian and global health priorities. Climate resilience needs to be achieved in tandem with proper planning around population ageing, and older people’s knowledge being harnessed. As the climate crisis continues to unravel with such devastating consequences as this, it is those already experiencing marginalisation within their communities, including older people, who are the hardest hit; Wealthy governments including the UK must commit to supporting climate adaptation that is actively inclusive. #ClimateResilience #PopulationAgeing #ClimateAdaptation #Longevity
Two of the defining transformations of our time are happening simultaneously, but rarely discussed together. Our climate is changing. And our world is ageing. Right now, these two realities are colliding before our eyes as we witness the devastating flooding in Nepal. Are our cities, health and care systems, infrastructure and emergency plans actually prepared for ageing populations in an era of increasingly extreme weather? As we hold in our hearts the people of Nepal, those who have lost loved ones, homes and communities, and those still facing enormous uncertainty, we must also ask what we can learn and what we can do differently. In this article, I explore why I believe we need to start thinking about climate-ready longevity societies...before the next disaster strikes. I would welcome thoughts, particularly from colleagues working across ageing, climate resilience, health, cities and disaster preparedness.
