Privacy Policy
The privacy policy explain what you can expect from us, and the guidelines for using our services.
Legal
1. Who We Are
Universally (https://universally.com) provides a website translation platform that translates website content in real time and serves those translations to your visitors. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. It covers our marketing website, the Universally dashboard, and the translation services themselves. If you have any questions, contact us at [email protected].
2. Information We Collect
Account information. When you create an account we collect your name, email address, and a password (stored only in hashed form). If you join or create a workspace, we also store your role and membership within that workspace.
Billing information. Payments are processed by Stripe, our payment provider. Your full card details are collected and stored by Stripe, not by us. We receive and store limited billing data such as your subscription plan, billing status, invoices, and card metadata (for example the card brand and last four digits).
Website content. To provide the Services, we receive the content of the websites you connect to Universally, and we generate, store, and serve translations of that content. We process this content solely to provide the translation service.
Usage data. We collect data about how the Services are used, such as translated word counts, feature usage, and technical logs (including IP addresses and browser information) used for security, debugging, rate limiting, and abuse prevention.
Communications. If you contact support or receive emails from us, we keep those communications and the information you provide in them.
3. Your Website Visitors
When your website uses Universally, translation requests from your site pass through our infrastructure. These requests can include the page content being translated and technical data about the requesting visitor, such as an IP address and browser information. We process this data transiently to deliver translations, cache results, and protect the service against abuse. We do not use your visitors’ data to build profiles, and we do not sell it. For the content of your website, we act as a service provider (processor) on your behalf — you remain responsible for your own website’s privacy disclosures to your visitors.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to provide and operate the Services; to process payments, renewals, and automatic plan upgrades; to send transactional emails such as usage alerts, plan changes, and password resets; to respond to support requests; to secure the Services and prevent abuse; and to understand usage so we can improve the product. We do not sell personal information.
5. Cookies
The Universally dashboard uses cookies that are strictly necessary to operate the service — for example to keep you signed in and to remember interface preferences.
On our marketing website, if you leave a comment you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies for your convenience; these last for one year. If you visit the login page, a temporary cookie checks whether your browser accepts cookies and is discarded when you close your browser. Login cookies last for two days (two weeks with “Remember Me”) and are removed when you log out.
6. Comments & Embedded Content
When visitors leave comments on our marketing website we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. Comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. An anonymized hash of your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to check if you use it (see https://automattic.com/privacy/); after approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Articles on our website may include embedded content (such as videos or images) from other websites. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website, which may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction with the embedded content.
7. Who We Share Data With
We share data only with service providers that help us operate Universally, and only to the extent needed to provide the Services:
- Payment processing — Stripe, for subscriptions, invoices, and charges.
- Cloud infrastructure and hosting — providers that run our application, databases, and content delivery.
- AI translation providers — third-party machine translation models that process your website content solely to produce translations.
- Email delivery — providers used to send transactional emails and notifications.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (in which case this policy continues to apply to your data). We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
8. Data Retention
We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. Translations and website content are retained while your site remains connected to the Services; if you cancel your subscription or your account is terminated, stored data — including translations — may be permanently deleted after a reasonable period, as described in our Terms of Service. Technical logs are kept for a limited time for security and operations. Comments left on our marketing website and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up comments can be recognized and approved automatically.
9. Security
We protect your data using industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit, hashed password storage, and access controls limiting who can access personal data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information against unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction.
10. International Data Transfers
Universally operates on globally distributed cloud infrastructure, so your data may be processed in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
11. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can view and update your account information at any time from your dashboard, and you can request an export or deletion of your data by emailing [email protected]. Deletion requests do not extend to data we are required to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
12. Children’s Privacy
The Services are not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through the Services. Continued use of the Services after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
14. Contact Information
If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or how we handle your data, contact us at: [email protected]
