Feels like format could do with a refresh to get more people back for Day 2? Lots (and lots) of AI chat (quelle surprise) but still feels like lots of retailers trying to truly figure out how to truly use it to their advantage. Beyond just for creating content and enriching some product data. Be interesting to see how quickly things move on in the next 12 months. Who does all the accelerated use of AI benefit more in eComm; businesses or customers? Obviously it can be both but feels like perhaps it’s still weighted too much the wrong way. Joe Turner shared thisTime for my annual post iWeb & Proof3 Live thank you's. I am of course bias but I reckon it might just have been our best one yet. Thankfully the feedback form submissions so far back me up. New venue, new formats but ultimately still the same great energy and good conversations with good people. A few things that stuck with me; Trust is quickly becoming a visibility problem, not just a conversion problem. It’s no longer enough to be found. You need to be the brand that gets recommended. Most retailers aren’t struggling with a lack of ideas. They’re struggling with prioritisation. Knowing what to focus on, what to ignore, and how to actually get things done. The most interesting AI examples weren’t the flashy ones. They were the practical applications helping teams save time, improve decisions and remove friction. Perhaps the biggest takeaway was that despite all the noise around AI, the fundamentals haven’t changed nearly as much as people think. For the last 12 months we’ve seen a flood of new acronyms: GEO. AEO. LLMO. Along with endless advice about: - Chunking content - Creating llms.txt files - Publishing pages for AI bots - Engineering citations - “Prompt optimisation” for Google Google’s most recent guidance says something very different. If you want to perform well in Google Search, including AI-powered experiences: ✅ Build a technically sound website ✅ Create genuinely useful content ✅ Demonstrate expertise ✅ Give people information they can’t get everywhere else In other words… The same fundamentals that have worked for years. One line stood out: “You can ignore tactics like chunking content, creating unnecessary AI text files (like llms.txt), or pursuing inauthentic mentions.” That’s Google saying it, not us. The more interesting part is what they do recommend: → Create non-commodity content → Share real expertise → Build things worth referencing → Stay aware of how AI agents may interact with websites in future The irony? The businesses most likely to benefit from AI search aren’t the ones chasing AI search hacks. They’re the ones creating content, products and experiences that are genuinely useful. The technology is changing. The job isn’t. Clarity. Authority. Trust. Still the same game. In fact, I built my afternoon around attending the talk. It’s not only inspirational hearing them talk about their successes and how they drove football forward both on and off the pitch, but also how amazing they are at public speaking! Takeaways from their talk: Live for the small moments, those are the ones you remember. It was never just about football, it was about winning at the club in many other ways. Was the club developing? Were we getting the facilities we needed? Are we better than last year? Create a world where everyone feels like they can speak up. Make people feel seen. They will run through walls for you. Be vulnerable. Be comfortable with the uncomfortable because that’s how you grow and succeed. They were even kind enough to have a quick chat with me about public speaking afterwards. Legends! 🙌🏻

One of the first things we do when we take on a new SEO client at Rapid SEO London is run their site through a performance audit. And almost without fail this flags up image file sizes being way too big. What staggers us is that web designers who charge thousands of pounds to build these sites have known that page loading speed has been a Google ranking factor since 2017. Google has been completely explicit about it. And yet so many designers still do not give a second thought to correctly sizing or compressing images before handing the site over to the client. The dashboard looked too good to be true, so I wanted to see where the fire was. We audited a UK B2B campaign that reported a beautiful average CPC of £0.50. But the cost-per-lead sat at £180. If clicks are that cheap, why are leads so expensive? The average marketer would look at the low CPC and congratulate themselves. I wanted to see exactly how we were getting burned, so I broke open the Performance Max placement logs. What we found was beautiful in how broken it was. Google was spending 30% of the budget showing ads in kids' coloring apps and baby puzzles. Toddlers playing games on their parents' iPads do not fill out B2B contact forms. They just tap the screen to make the ad go away. Because those mobile game clicks cost pennies, the sheer volume of accidental taps dragged down the average CPC of the entire account. On paper, it looked like we were buying incredibly efficient traffic. In reality, the high-intent search clicks from actual buyers were costing £5.00 each. Exactly 10 times the average CPC reported on the dashboard. The algorithm was hiding the expensive buyer traffic under a mountain of cheap toddler clicks. It optimized for click velocity, starved the search budget, and fed the money to coloring apps. I had to put my hand in the fire to see the leak, but now you do not have to. If your average CPC is cheap but your sales team has nothing to do: 1. Go to your PMax campaign. 2. Select Reports, Predefined Reports, then Performance Max Placements. 3. If mobile apps are eating your budget, apply account-level exclusions. Smart bidding wants to spend your money.
