Alex Kendall reposted thisAlex Kendall reposted thisMercedes-Benz and Wayve have signed an agreement to integrate the Wayve AI Driver into series production of a future Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the world’s first integration of Wayve in the premium segment. This will extend the availability of L2 advanced urban and highway point-to-point driving assistance to a broader range of customers. This agreement follows our strategic investment in Wayve’s Series D funding round earlier this year and builds on a multi-year technical partnership between our teams. It also reflects a shared ambition: As the pioneer in automated driving, our strategy with MB.DRIVE is to bring the most advanced ADAS systems to as many customers as possible. This is in addition to the collaboration with our long-standing partners NVIDIA – with whom we are developing L2 through L4 capabilities – and Momenta. We are about to launch MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO in the US and Europe, with China being already successfully on the road. Progress in this complex field is not about choosing one path over another but about combining and integrating the most promising technologies. And thanks to MB.OS, we have the foundation to bring the best of the best together for our customers: safe, reliable and always focused on delivering the best automated driving experience.

Alex Kendall liked thisAlex Kendall liked thisThe Institute for Driverless Transport team went to Wayve's London HQ yesterday to meet the team and take one of their cars out for a spin - or rather, for 𝘪𝘵 to take us out for one! The ride lasted about 40 minutes, taking a challenging route through busy North London. The car had to weave around a forklift truck crawling along the road, react to people stepping out in front of us, and negotiate with another car trying to cut into our lane - it felt a bit like the 'hazard perception' part of my driving theory test when I was 17! Wayve's AI Driver was able to handle everything that was thrown at it, and the safety driver didn't need to step in once. Having now seen it first hand, I think Wayve's tech is beyond impressive. Since TfL licensed them for private hire in August, a small number of Wayve cars are now on Uber in London. There's still a trained driver on board for now, ready to take control if needed. The tech is clearly getting there, and at IfDT we're thinking about what that'll mean for the UK's economy and society. Huge thanks to Wayve for hosting me, James Hutt, and Tym S.

Together with our customers we have made immense progress towards this future over the last year. You can see it in the metrics - 2M flights/year and exponentially growing - and you can see it in the thousands of individual stories where a drone helped save a life, protect an asset, or just save someone from tedious manual work. But we’re still just getting started. On stage at Skydio Ascend, we announced two new categories of products that will shape the next decade: • The software Commands: DFR Command, Asset Command, and Security Command. We’re now tapping the true potential of software-defined, autonomous, dock-based drones with industry-specific applications for Public Safety, Energy Infrastructure, and Physical Site Security. Each Command brings together specialized autonomy, customized interfaces and workflows, and deep integrations with complementary software and systems to orchestrate fleets of flying robots and deliver end-to-end solutions for each industry. This makes drones easier to adopt and integrate than ever before, and orders of magnitude more effective once you’re operating them. • F10 Lightrunner: This is the most advanced fixed-wing drone that has ever existed. It’s launched and caught with a robotic arm (RTOL); its gimbal is on the wingtip which means it never gets obstructed by the wing (SideEye); and it has the evolution of Skydio Autonomy for fixed-wing aircraft (Foresight). All of these together represent one of the great feats of engineering in the history of aircraft, but we didn’t do it just for fun. F10 will bring the benefits of Drone as First Responder and fully automated drone inspection of critical infrastructure to all the landmass in the free world with 100mph speed and up to 30-mile coverage radius. We build the coolest technology in the world, with the best team in the world, to serve the most important customers in the world. LFG.

Some of you know that we have been working on something big and we can finally talk about it. CommonAI has its first members: the UK's Advances Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) has joined the Scaling Inference Programme as part of a £50M project to bring down the cost of compute for AI and accelerate the route to market for selected startups. We are building a lab here in the UK to explore cutting edge hardware and software technologies and accelerate their route to market. The startups that we are working with in this programme will be announced soon so look out for more details, but in the meantime you can read about us in the Times or get in touch to find out more.

I am at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in London at a conference on autonomous vehicles. The UK Government has allocated £135m of funding for autonomous vehicle trials and demonstration programmes - and they’re going to arrive in the UK far sooner than most people think. They are here, on London’s roads, right now. Currently in pre-launch testing, with Waymo and Wayve both collecting mapping and sensor data, and training the AI to recognise London-specific road features. We are set to see self driving taxis on the streets of London and Manchester, autonomous shuttle buses in Birmingham, Coventry and Milton Keynes and quarry vehicles in Scotland, all by this Spring. Over the past year, I have been heading up a team investigating what this means for heavy goods vehicles. With 63,000 job vacancies for HGV drivers today, and a further 150,000 HGV drivers due to retire in the next ten years, autonomous HGVs could provide huge benefits for this industry. What we have discovered has been far more profound. We're on the cusp of a technology that is so transformative, it will change the way we think of logistics, with significant cost savings and efficiency gains that could turn the industry upside down. #autonomousvehicles #ehgv #selfdrive VOLTEMPO Simon Smith Paul Jordan Jaynie Smith Neil Durno John Fox

💡 "If we knew what this was supposed to train for, we could do it better." That quote from a data annotator captures a critical challenge in developing AI perception systems for autonomous driving - and it's just one of many issues we uncovered in our latest research. I'm excited to share research I contributed to as an industry partner from Kognic, led by Hina Saeeda After 50+ hours of interviews across the supply chain - from OEMs to Tier-2 suppliers - we've identified 18 recurring data annotation errors that compromise system safety and reliability. Some errors were expected: 👉 Bounding box misalignments 👉 Wrong class labels 👉 Inter-annotator disagreement Others were surprises: 👉 Missing feedback loops (lack of close loop error handling, errors found but not corrected) 👉 Privacy/compliance omissions (GDPR requires face blurring, but this removes critical pedestrian appearance data needed for training robust detection models) 👉 Cross-modality misalignment (camera and lidars don't sync) What struck us most: these aren't just "data problems" - they're organizational, process, and tooling challenges that cascade through the entire AI lifecycle. Yet there's no systematic way to diagnose, track, or prevent them. Teams across the supply chain are dealing with annotation errors ad-hoc, without shared vocabulary or structured approaches. When we validated our findings with practitioners, the response was clear: they needed exactly this kind of framework. One OEM safety expert said it could be used for root-cause analysis of perception failures. A Tier-1 engineer called it a "checklist for setting up annotation pipelines." A Tier-2 director said it would improve client discussions and QA processes. That's the power of systematic approaches - they turn invisible problems into manageable engineering challenges. Proud to represent Kognic in this research - our commitment is clear: advancing autonomous driving requires not just better algorithms, but better data practices. Industry-academia collaboration like this is how we get there. Thanks to Hina Saeeda, Mazen Mohamad and Eric Knauss for leading this important work, and to my colleagues at Kognic for supporting this industry-academia collaboration. #AutonomousDriving #AIEngineering #DataQuality #SafetyCriticalAI #ADAS

Waymo is going to London in '26. My experience in one in SF was amazing! Key takeaways: • Safety first: Waymo vehicles have 5× fewer injury-causing collisions and 12× fewer pedestrian incidents versus human drivers. • Local footprint: Engineering hubs in London and Oxford are already fine-tuning simulations for U.K. roads. • Strategic partnerships: Moove for fleet ops to Jaguar Land Rover’s all-electric I-PACEs • Global roll-out: After Tokyo tests in 2025, and U.S. services in Phoenix, SF, LA, Austin, there’s Miami, Dallas, Atlanta and more on deck. Why it matters to Infocusp Innovations: This aligns with what we’ve seen while building automotive AI solutions; you need to test on closed loop simulations with real-time data pipelines. Our experience in LLM-powered incident management and RAG-driven sensor analytics taught us that modular, secure cloud architectures can accelerate both compliance and innovation. Best Practices for anyone in AI/transport tech: 1. Invest early in local testing to adapt to unique traffic patterns. 2. Forge OEM and regulator partnerships to smooth the path to market. 3. Prioritize data-driven safety metrics to build public trust. How do you see autonomous ride-hailing reshaping urban life in the next five years? Read more: https://lnkd.in/gJn7Urc2

TONY HO, the founder of Osmosis AI, is featured in Mirror Review. Osmosis AI is a London-based company focused on retrofitting existing vans and trucks rather than building entirely new autonomous vehicles. Osmosis AI installs its Driver Agent on commercial vehicles at a significantly lower cost than purchasing new autonomous vehicles. This retrofit model makes autonomous driving more affordable and practical for logistics companies. Tony emphasises a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) business model, in which fleet operators pay a monthly fee rather than a large upfront cost. Osmosis AI plans to begin automation in controlled environments, such as depot yards, before expanding to longer routes. Tony’s team includes Leo Francis, who leads electronics and PCB design and ensures vehicle robustness, and Mouneesh S., who designs the actuators and mounts that control the vehicles. Osmosis AI is progressing toward advanced AI models, such as Vision-Language-Action (VLA), for real-world driving. Tony’s long-term vision extends beyond autonomous driving to broader robotics applications, while remaining focused on delivering practical, incremental innovations that meet customer needs today. 🔗 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eqiVgYqf

This paper presents a hybrid planning framework for autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) tasked with searching for and physically capturing multiple drifting targets (e.g., floating litter) in dynamic, a priori unknown marine environments. The core challenge lies in balancing exploration—to discover new targets—with exploitation—to intercept known targets before they drift away—a classic exploration-exploitation trade-off that existing methods often handle with greedy, short-sighted strategies. The authors' main contribution is a framework that combines a global informative trajectory planner based on Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) control with a pure pursuit guidance controller for terminal interception. The MPPI-based planner generates smooth, continuous velocity-level commands over long horizons by using importance-weighted Monte Carlo sampling. Crucially, it employs a multi-objective cost function that jointly optimizes exploration (reducing map uncertainty), target tracking (minimizing distance and bearing to predicted target locations), and trajectory feasibility (smoothness and collision avoidance). The use of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process noise—rather than standard Gaussian noise—produces more diverse and smoother sampled trajectories. Once the ASV is near a target, the system switches to a pure pursuit controller to ensure precise interception. The framework is validated through high-fidelity simulations in the Virtual Robot-X (VRX) simulator and through field trials with a real ASV. Simulation results show that the MPPI-based planner significantly outperforms baseline methods, including receding horizon planning over discrete actions, frontier-based exploration, and fixed coverage patterns. For example, in the most challenging scenario with 20 drifting targets, the proposed method achieved an average of 15.6 captures, compared to 13.6 for the best-performing baseline. Ablation studies confirm that the tracking cost is the most critical component, as removing it drastically reduces captures, while the exploration and path costs each contribute marginally to overall performance. Field trials further demonstrate the system's real-world viability, successfully capturing all three deployed targets in a dynamic lake environment. Overall, this work provides a robust and practical solution for autonomous environmental cleanup and search-and-rescue missions, effectively unifying long-horizon informative planning with precise terminal guidance. https://lnkd.in/gPhkZ3uB
