Alongside inspiring more women and girls to see construction as a career to aspire to, we walked to champion male allyship, encouraging men to challenge outdated attitudes and behaviours, while also highlighting the importance of creating positive role models and pathways for young men. As a traditionally male-dominated industry, we recognise the influence construction can have on other industries and across wider society – including using our collective voice and actions to help raise awareness of violence against women and girls. This is a significant move in the right direction that addresses the problem of growing youth unemployment, currently at 16.4% and the ever increasing number of NEETs, predicted to top 1 million this year (to our national shame). Now HM Gov needs to overhaul the apprenticeship scheme to incentivise employers to support this change by getting involved with schools to develop young people and provide them with the opportunity for fulfilling careers. 🆕️ The government has announced new vocational GCSEs for students, allowing young people to study vocational courses at school. Baker Dearing has issued the following response from CEO Kate Ambrosi. “We fully welcome the government’s moves towards establishing new technical Level 2 qualifications. “Putting an end to the youth unemployment crisis will require an ambitious and comprehensive approach. That means improving the technical GCSE offer, opening up many more work experience opportunities, and other measures to create better lines of sight from the classroom to the workplace. “There needs to be a serious inspection of how we are training and developing specialist teachers; investment in state-of-the-art, industry-standard equipment and facilities; and more work on partnering schools with local employers. “Today’s announcement shows the government is off to a great start. It is right that the existing GCSEs, particularly technical and vocational ones, are put under review to ensure they are properly preparing young people for apprenticeships and work. “We look forward to working with the Department for Education to ensure that the review and any subsequent reforms help engage young people in education, improve their skills and knowledge, and progress them to great destinations. But also that the reforms build on the good work that has been done before now and helpful measures already in place. “Baker Dearing and the University Technical College secondary schools and UTC Sleeves we support are looking forward to sharing with educators, employers and ministers our nearly 20 years’ experience delivering high-quality, employer-led technical education for students." #thinkUTC https://lnkd.in/e_FzMePz

From the outset, the ambition was to bring our industry together around its future – inspiring more women and girls to see construction as a career to aspire to, championing male allyship to challenge outdated attitudes and behaviours, and creating positive pathways and role models for young men. It was also about recognising the influence a major, traditionally male-dominated industry can have – helping to shape the future of construction, while using our collective voice to influence other industries and the wider society. For Mike Hook, who has been a driving force behind the walk, seeing so many people embrace what we set out to achieve and give their time, energy and voice to it was incredibly humbling.
