About us
Every day at Hestia, we support people to find a #LifeBeyondCrisis. We work hard to end domestic abuse & modern slavery & respond to the growing mental health crisis. We provide specialist support every step of the way of recovery and ensure communities are part of the solution Hestia supports adults and children in crisis across London and the surrounding regions. We campaign and advocate nationally on the issues that affect them. This includes victims of modern slavery, women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, young care leavers and older people. From giving someone a home, to helping them to get the right mental health support, we support people at the moment of crisis and enable them to build a life beyond crisis. We are supported by more than 460 volunteers who provide specialist skills such as art therapy yoga, IT, gardening, cooking as well as befriending and fundraising. We are proud to be the home of UK SAYS NO MORE, bringing together a diverse coalition of individuals, charities, businesses and public-sector organisations to campaign for an end to the domestic abuse and sexual violence. In everything we do, we seek to be: respectful, genuine, dedicated, collaborative and courageous.

What is #ArtIsFreedom? It’s an exhibition that showcases artwork created by survivors of #ModernSlavery in iconic locations across London. Our video shows the process and journey behind creating #ArtIsFreedom 🎥 Every year we have a theme. This year’s is ‘This Is Me’, chosen by survivor-artists. “If you spoke up or made a mistake you were beaten, burned or threatened.” Christopher (name changed), describing the horrendous reality of being forced to work without pay in a trendy food court in central London in today's Big Issue. Customers buying lunch upstairs had no idea what was happening below. https://lnkd.in/eZebEqsM This year, referrals to the NRM (the UK’s framework for identifying victims of modern slavery) have reached record levels. And counter to popular perception, the most commonly-referred group are British Nationals like Christopher. A lot of the work I’m proudest of shines a light on issues like modern slavery, a human rights tragedy taking place literally under our noses. But there is always a balance in telling these stories honestly and powerfully, while ensuring those who share their experiences are safe and have a say in how their stories are told. That was at the forefront of my mind while working with Christopher, Greg Barradale and Hestia Charity's amazing Modern Slavery team on today’s Big Issue piece. It was a real pleasure working with you all on this story. Please do read and share it! Where would you feel most comfortable asking for mental health support? 🏠 For many Londoners, the answer is somewhere familiar and close to home. 40% would prefer to access mental health support in local settings such as GP surgeries, community centres or charities. By comparison, just 16% would prefer to receive support in hospital. This matters. If we want people to seek support earlier, services need to feel accessible, familiar and connected to everyday life.
