📣 For too long, victim-survivors of sexual violence have been failed by a system that asks them to pay far too high a price for justice. Today, the Government has announced a package of measures designed to improve their experiences. We welcome these, many of which reflect Victim Support’s recommendations based on our research into victim-survivors’ appalling experiences of the justice system. Urgent steps to reduce painful waits and adjournments for victim-survivors and witnesses, and create a more trauma-informed court experience, are desperately needed and long overdue. 🚨 Now the Government must ensure these commitments are backed by sufficient funding and sustained focus, so that this positive announcement translates into action – and real, lasting change for victim-survivors. 🔗 Read our full research, Suffering for Justice: https://lnkd.in/erFZAawk

Today marks 25 years since the attacks of 11 September 2001. We remember all those who lost their lives, and all those whose lives were changed forever that day. We know this anniversary will be very difficult for many people, but help is available. The Support Hub for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism provides specialist support for people affected by terrorist incidents, whenever they happened. The Hub is delivered by Victim Support, in partnership with Peace Collective CIC and West London NHS Trust. We are shocked by Michael O’Leary’s appalling and offensive remarks today. As Rape Crisis England & Wales and others have said, his comments are completely unacceptable and deeply insulting to survivors of rape and sexual abuse. Sexual violence should never be trivialised. https://lnkd.in/ekMXusqn

The Government’s police reforms – including abolition of Police and Crime Commissioners – mean major changes for how vital support services for victims are funded. These changes must be built on clear, robust principles – and they must put victims and survivors first. If the Government gets this right, they can deliver high-quality, independent services that are there for every victim – whatever the crime, wherever they live, whenever they need them. Every victim has the right to support to help them cope and move forwards after crime. #VictimSupport #PoliceReform

It’s unacceptable that victims and survivors are paying the price for police failings. Today's report from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services shows that victims and survivors are still not receiving the standard of service they should expect from the police, including good quality investigations and victims' vulnerabilities being correctly identified. As our CEO Katie Kempen responded: “Police forces are undoubtedly under immense pressure, but they must get the basics right. "Every victim of crime deserves to be treated with respect, to be given access to justice, and to have their needs identified and met. “Police forces must address these failings - and the government must urgently implement long-promised measures to ensure victims’ rights are delivered, monitored and enforced. 📣 If you’re a victim of crime, you have rights under the Victims’ Code. But too often public bodies aren’t delivering these rights consistently or robustly – and victims are suffering as a result. The Government has promised measures to record, oversee and monitor how these rights are delivered. It must now enforce them.
