The Grand Coven Library - solo rpg zine

You are a librarian, a gatherer of magic lore for the Grand Coven Library. Each day, you catalog recently acquired tomes. Your task is to categorize these magical texts and summarize their contents. You might well find instructions for tealeaf reading, prayers to ancient gods, or a hex to turn your rival into a newt. When you’ve finished determining the contents of each book, fill out a catalog card and add it to the official library database.

THE GRAND COVEN LIBRARY is a cozy cataloging game, a solo rpg with a community website.

Cataloging a book means determining the author, the title, and the contents then briefly describing that information on a library catalog card. You may also be inspired to provide additional notes, such as a table of contents, unusual facts found in the book, a sketch of the cover, or a list of figures. The more information, the more helpful the catalog!

At the end of each brief session, you'll have created a Library Catalog Card. You can play this game just for the fun of generating fantasy book titles, but it can also be a great resource for GMs and writers wanting to add some flavor to the texts your characters might find on their adventures.

Specs:

The Grand Coven Library is a small zine-size game. It will be 20 pages, plus the cover, measuring about 5.5 x 8.25 inches. I am printing it at home on my professional-grade printer on deluxe paper. 

To play, you will need a standard tarot deck (or a way to randomly generate tarot cards, there are plenty of online ways to do this), a pen & paper, and one die (optional). 

Each time you play, you will draw one Major Arcana card to inspire the tone and author of the book, and one Minor Arcana card to inspire the overall magic category and the specific topic of the book. Each of the cards' prompts have multiple examples, which you can use as inspiration or use the dice to determine the specific one.

Once you've completed an entry, you can also add it to the Official Grand Coven Library Index: a custom website where you can get an official GCL call number, print a catalog card, AND explore all the books your fellow librarians have entered.
