This story offers a useful analogy for the rule of law in cross-border trade. Bear with me! No customs authority can physically inspect every shipment, just as no society can monitor every transaction or prevent every act of dishonesty. Nor should it try. What matters is that credible systems exist to identify anomalies, connect data points and act quickly when misconduct is detected. In trade, this increasingly means risk-based targeting, digital records, post-clearance audit and decisive enforcement - not opening every container at the border. The hallmark of a high-trust society is not that everyone can be trusted. It is that those who abuse that trust are identified quickly, consequences follow and a meaningful deterrent is established. Trust and enforcement are therefore not opposites. Effective enforcement is what makes trust-based systems possible—and allows legitimate trade to move faster. This Singapore case is a small but telling example. The hotel manager followed up because he could reasonably expect that a proven transgression would be taken seriously. In another jurisdiction, the same manager might not have bothered—particularly if experience suggested that reporting it would lead nowhere. That is how high-trust systems sustain themselves: not through blind faith in everyone’s honesty, but through confidence that dishonesty will be detected and acted upon. https://lnkd.in/g47h9cfZ

The degree of CNY undervaluation, now about 25% on our fear metrics, is comparable to that period of the China shock in the mid-2000s, which was followed by substantial currency appreciation. Our expectation is that allowing some modest but sustained appreciation is part of the equilibrium mechanism. We've already seen this start this year, with the USD/CNY fix moving consistently stronger since Liberation Day, and we expect this to extend. Our 12-month forecast is now 6.85, stronger than consensus and forwards, though forwards have caught up. The common pushback is that given domestic demand weakness, authorities won't allow currency strength due to the external side's importance for growth. However, policymakers are likely to deploy other tools for domestic demand and housing markets (credit, fiscal, property measures). Second, the currency's undervaluation is so severe, and China's cost advantage so great, that policymakers should be comfortable with a gradual appreciation pace that aids RMB internationalization and keeps the currency cheap. Third, to mitigate negative competitive impact in other countries (like Europe), sustained appreciation, even slow, can prevent severe protectionist pushback.
