The Chromatin & Genome Integrity Lab (Lund University, Sweden 🇸🇪) is hiring! Postdoctoral Fellow: Chromatin-based mechanisms safeguarding genome and epigenome integrity in human neurons Defective DNA repair has been associated with neurodegenerative disorders, highlighting the importance of understanding how genome integrity is maintained in human neurons. DNA repair takes place within a dynamic chromatin environment, and changes in chromatin structure can influence the repair of DNA lesions. We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher to investigate the chromatin-based mechanisms that safeguard genome and epigenome integrity in human neurons following DNA damage. The successful candidate will use human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), iPSC-derived neurons, quantitative image-based cytometry, and targeted protein degradation to address fundamental questions relevant to neurodegeneration while developing multidisciplinary expertise at the interface of chromatin biology, DNA repair, and neuroscience. This is a two-year position, with the possibility of extension. We welcome applications from researchers with: ◦ A strong interest in and knowledge of chromatin biology and/or DNA repair mechanisms in mammalian cells; ◦ Experience with, or an interest in learning, human iPSC and neuronal models; ◦ Expertise in molecular biology techniques and protein biochemistry; ◦ The ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative research environment. How to apply? Contact me (giulia.saredi[at]med.lu.se) for more information or to submit an application. The application should consist of: 1) a cover letter explaining how the position fits with your scientific interests, skills, and long-term goals; 2) your CV, including a publication list and date of PhD defence (or expected date); 3) contact details for two referees (reference letters are not required at this stage). Deadline: Sunday, 11 October 2026, 23:59 CET.med.lu.se) for more information or to submit an application. Apart from being Senior Attending Physician at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene, Silvio D Brugger has his own research group. Its main focus is on bacterial interspecies interactions in the human host as a source for microbiota-targeted therapies. In addition, he is also working on projects about infectious disease epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance. Join us to hear him talk about "Microbiota-targeted interventions for prevention of infections" on 17 September at Lund Stem Cell Center!

When researchers at Lund Stem Cell Center investigated how the molecule UM171 works, a molecule used to make blood stem cells multiply, they made an unexpected connection. The results provide new insights into how one of the most common malignant brain tumours in children could be treated in the future. The molecule works by exploiting a protein called KBTBD4. This causes an important protein structure in the cell, called CoREST, to break down. "The same structure in the cell is also affected by mutations in the KBTBD4 gene, genetic changes that occur in a subgroup of aggressive brain tumours in children. Although the causes differ, the result is the same — the structure breaks down," says Agathees Subramaniam. The researchers also carried out a large-scale drug screen and found that HDAC inhibitors counteract the effects of KBTBD4 mutations. HDAC inhibitors are a type of drug that affects gene activity in cells. The study is an example of so-called drug repurposing, where an already approved drug is given a new use in another disease area. "The findings provide new knowledge about how these brain tumours arise and point to a possible route towards future treatments" says Rohit Sivaprasad. 👏 A milestone for stem cell-based therapies in Parkinson’s disease 👏 A landmark study led from Lunds universitet reports the first clinical results from the STEM-PD trial. The study shows that transplanting stem cell-derived dopamine progenitor cells into the brain is feasible. Eight people with Parkinson’s disease received the transplanted cells, and no serious side effects linked to the cell product were observed during the first year of follow-up 🙏 “The possibility of replacing dopamine neurons that are lost in Parkinson’s disease has been a long-standing goal in the field. The findings represent an important milestone for regenerative medicine approaches in Parkinson’s disease and support continued clinical development of stem cell-based therapies,” says Malin Parmar, Professor at Lund University and lead of the STEM-PD programme. The results build on decades of pioneering research in dopamine cell replacement therapy in Lund and close collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and the participating patients. The clinical trial was carried out through collaboration between scientists and clinicians at Lunds universitet University and University of Cambridge ✨ 📸 Skåne University Hospital, Gunnar Gunnarsson. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dRQ4gRx4 Skånes universitetssjukhus (Skåne University Hospital) Barker Lab Novo Nordisk Cellular Intelligence MultiPark- Multidisciplinary Neuroresearch Medicinska fakulteten, Lunds universitet #ParkinsonsDisease #StemCells #RegenerativeMedicine #Neuroscience #STEMPD
