Abstract

A telecommunications network includes means (30) for collecting and recording data relating to services used by a user of the network, and means (32) for configuring a user terminal to use services based on the recorded service data. The configuring means (32) may configure the user terminal IA automatically. For example, the configuring means (32) may comprise an inference algorithm (38) which analyses the recorded service data and predicts how the terminal IA should be configured, and then automatically configures the user terminal IA automatically with possibly no input from the user. Alternatively, the configuration means (32) may configure the user terminal IA by prompting the user to make selections based on the recorded service data. The collecting means (30) may be operable to collect the service data in relation to services used by the user using a device other than the user terminal IA. For example, this other device might be device (1) used previously to obtain services. The collecting means (30) collects a history of data relating to the use of services by this other device (1). When the user changes to a new device (the user terminal IA), this collected data can be used to configure the user terminal IA in an automatic or assisted manner. The service data may include service settings, authentication data, user preferences and/or information relating to the storage location of applications to be used by the terminal (from which the applications may be downloaded).
