Abstract

A memory device in which a basic chassis for accepting external access to the data stored on a memory medium and extended chassis for extending add-on memory media managed by the basic chassis are connected via a data access path. In the memory device, a switch chip for forming a data access path for the extended chassis is always activated to enable communication via the data access path even in a standby state. At startup, the basic chassis sends a startup command to an extended chassis via the data access path, and then in turn the extended chassis receiving the startup command starts itself and transfers the startup command to a next-stage extended chassis, thereby starting the overall memory device.
