Abstract

A system and method for creating (210), editing (220) and distributing (230) stereoscopic images (214, 216) is disclosed. The system and method are adapted to provide a registered complementary pair of stereoscopic images (214, 216) suitable for viewing a three dimensional image using a preselected viewing format. This is accomplished using templates stored in a memory device. A processor selects an appropriate template based on a selection of the viewing format and registers the stereoscopically complementary image pair (228) for that format using the template. Registration may involve alignment (226), keying (229) or combination of alignment and keying of the images. Finally, the system and method provide for the distribution (230) of registered stereoscopically complementary pairs of images suitable for a variety of different viewing formats. The invention has the advantage that a variety of different viewing formats can be accommodated while at the same time user manipulation of the image pairs is minimized to ensure a positive viewing experience.
