CHARLES W. IBOULTON, 0F WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES F. SHIELDS, OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
- CURTAIN-ROD LEADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BOULTON, citizen of the United States, residing at Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Rod Leaders, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates particularly to curtain rods and the like, which may be employed wherever it is necessary to engage rods within turned over portions of flexible material.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of this character by the use of which the binding of the abrupt extremity of a rod is prevented when engaged through the turned over portion of the flexible material and the rod is enabled to pass readily through the same.
The inventlon further provides the provision of a device of this character which Corresponding and like parts are re-- ferred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings the numerals 10 and 11 designate two portions of leather, canvas or a like flexible material which are formed with enlarged extremities 12 and 13 and which are reduced adjacent their opposite extremities, the extremities adjacent said reduced portions being enlarged and formed circularly as disclosed at 14. The portions of flexible material 10 and 11 are placed together in registered relation and are secured about their opposite faces by means of a metallic strip 15 which is formed into a channel member and engaged over the edges of the portions 10 and 11 and clamped in such position. The strip 15 is bent to the curvature of the edges of the portions 10 and 11 and is terminated at its opposite extremities adjacent the inner or enlarged extremities 12 and 13 of the portions 10 and 11 in order to leave the outer edges thereof free, for the purpose of admitting of the insertion of the abrupt extremity .of a rod 16.
A device of this construction forms a tapered pocket which is adapted to receive rods 16 of various diameters which are engaged against the inner sides of theportions 10 and 11 to a depth within the pocket proportional to a size of the rod.
In the drawings is disclosed a portion of flexible material 17 which is provided with a turned over portion 18 which forms a channel or passageway along the upper edge of the flexible materlal 17 and into which the circularly formed outer extremity 14 of the threader or leader is adapted to be engaged. Owing to the construction of the device the extremity 14 is flattened and reinforced by the portion of the metallic strip 15 which surrounds the same and thereby serves the purpose of engaging-between the sides of the turned over portion 18. As the leader is of tapered formation, it is readily seen that as the same is forced into the turned over portion 18, the turned over portion is forced apart to enable the insertion of the rod 16 into the same. The enlarged extremities of the portions 10 and 11 are provided with apertures 19 for the purpose of admitting of the suspension of the device upon a hook, nail or the like when the same is not in use.
Having thus described the inventlon, what is claimed as new is z A device of the class described comprising two portions of flexible material having onlarged extremities and reduced androunded extremities, said portions of material being positioned in laminated relation, and a metallic strip clamped about the edges of said portions to secure the same, said strip terminated adjacent the enlarged extremit es of said portions for the purpose of admltting of the insertion of a rod between-the same. i
In testimony whereof I afiix'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
