Description

REEVE, SMITH, & SWARTWOUT.
Sewing Machine.
Patented Sept, 21, 1869.
Y to the one used in said machine.
UNJITED STATES;
PATENT QFFIGE.
T. S. REEVE, O. D. SMITH, AND H. L. SWARTWOUT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; SAID SMITH AND REEVE ASSIGN THEIR RIGHT TO SAID SWARTWOUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 94,976, dated September 21,1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, '1. S. REEVE, (J. D. SMITH, and H. L. SwARTwoUT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Machine for Sewing on the Soles of Boots and Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters marked thereon making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of our invention, consisting of a twisted needle, a needle-bar, and its attachments; Fig. 2, a twisted needle in position as it is when making a stitch.
The nature of the present invention consists in the employment of a twisted needle, arranged to rotate in the needle-bar and twist the thread which forms the stitch in the thicknesses of leather, as the whole is hereinafter fully described.
A represents a needle-bar, which is designed to be used in a machine for fastening on the soles of boots and shoes, patented by H. L. SWARTWoIiT on April 27, 1869, the shanks of the present needle-bar corresponding in form A twisted needle, G, is made of a thin piece of steel, and provided with a shank, which rotates in the lower end of said bar A, the upper end of the shank being provided with an annular groove, as shown by dotted lines 0, and held in place by a set-screw tapped into the edge of the thread J passes as it comes from the spool above down and under the forked end of the needle Gr. 7 I
By means of this construction and arrangement the stitch is twisted in the leather, as shown at Fig. 2, and left in that position as the needle is drawn out.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The twisted needle G, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the needle Gr, needlebar A, thread-bar O, and guide-loop F, as and for the purpose set forth.
