WLLIAM A. HOPKINS, 0F NEW YORK, N; Y.
Lam Patent No. 61,337, ama January 22, 1867.
IMPROVED GAN FOR PAINT, (itc.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HOPKINS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful improvements in the construction of Cans for putting up Paint and other substances; and I do declare the following to be a full,- clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of refer-.ence marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a top view of my invention.
Figure 2, a front view of the same.
Figure 3, a view of the ear and clamp detached from the can.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are pointed out by the saine letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in the construction of cans for putting up paints and other substances, as more i'ully hereinafter described.
. To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
A shows a can made of tin, or any suitable metal, and a is a bead formed upon the upper edge ofthe same by turning `the, metal over in the process of making. B shows the cover of my improved can, which cover may be made of wood, (as in the present instance,) or of any suitable material, and isiprovided with a rim, b, which,
when the cover is placed in position upon the can, extends a slight distance into the can. In` all cases I prefer the use of covers made from wood, as its strength, lightness, and economy are well known to all packers oi" paints and other substances. C C are ears soldered to the can' I at any convenient point, which ears-support the bail D, serving as a handle for the can. These, ears, C C, have their projecting edges, c c, ,turned over, so that they form the female portion of a hinge, the mile portion of which is formed by the clamps E Efas hereinafter described. 'E E show two clampsA employed by me, in combination with the ears C C, to hold the cover B in position after being placed upon the top of the can A. The sides of these clamps are slotted as at e and form the male port-ion of a hinge, while the lat portions are provided with the screw-holesffor the insertion of screws.
My improved can being thus constructed, the same may be filled with paint, or any substance, andv the cover B placed upon the same, its under side being brought flush with the top of the can; the slotted portions of the clamps are then passed'over the projecting edges oi' the ears, which are turned down and form a hinge as previously stated. The dat portions of the clamps now bear directly upon the head B, and screws may be employed to fasten the same down. In this condition the can and contents can be readily and safely transported without danger ofthe covers falling out or becoming disengaged fromithe can. The simplicity of myinventioncoupled with its comparatively small cost, particularly recommends it.
Having thus described my' invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the combination of the can, cover, ears, and clamps when the sanne are combined, constructed', and
operated substantially as shown for the purposes specilied.
W. A'. HOPKINS.
