- My illuminating compound is composed of the following-named ingredients, viz, naphtha, 40 gallons; sugar, 2 pounds; liquor ammoniae, 1-; pound; lard, 5 pounds; potash, 1% pound; glycerine, 8 ounces.
- the lard and potash are first intimately united, afterwhich the naphtha is added. After stirring well add the sugar.
- the ammonia is next incorporated, which materially aids in the deodorization of the compound and further assists the carhonization thereof.
- the glycerine is added, which, besides giving body to the compound, renders the same inflammable and highly useful as an illuminating material. It is evident that the proportions above specified may be varied without deteriorating the quality of the compound.

Description
JAMES SCOTT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
Letters Patent No. 61,768, datecl February 5, 1867.
IMPROVED ILLUMINATING COMPOUND.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that LJAMES SCOTT, of Washington, in the county of Washington, and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Illuminating Compound; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same.
My illuminating compound is composed of the following-named ingredients, viz, naphtha, 40 gallons; sugar, 2 pounds; liquor ammoniae, 1-; pound; lard, 5 pounds; potash, 1% pound; glycerine, 8 ounces. The lard and potash are first intimately united, afterwhich the naphtha is added. After stirring well add the sugar. The ammonia is next incorporated, which materially aids in the deodorization of the compound and further assists the carhonization thereof. Lastly, the glycerine is added, which, besides giving body to the compound, renders the same inflammable and highly useful as an illuminating material. It is evident that the proportions above specified may be varied without deteriorating the quality of the compound.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An illuminating compound, composed of the ingredients heretofore mentioned, in about the proportions stated, and compounded substantially as set forth. 1 JAMES SCOTT.
