Description
N-PETERS WIDTO-LITHDGRANER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED vSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE MOSMAN, OF CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CAnPET-STRETCHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,853, dated January 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MosMAN, of Ohicopee, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following specification and drawings represent the same.
The drawings and letters of reference marked thereon indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement in carpetstretchers will be fully understood from the accompanyin g specification and drawings.
The object desired to be attained by this invention is to produce a stretcher which will both hold the carpet and the tack by which it is to be secured in place where it is desirable to fasten it, and so that the stretcher can be as easily drawn away after the tack has been driven as though this improvement had not been attached thereto, thus holding the tack in an erect position and in the proper place to be driven.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face view of this improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional edge view. Fig. 3 is a view of the stretcher-plate as now in common use. Figs. 4 and 5 show a face view of the tack-holders. Figs. 6 and 7 show the springs by which the holders are held in position.
The springs a and a. are arranged on the face-plate of the stretcher, as shown in Fig'. 2, directly underneath the holders o, the ends of which are bent up, so that the ends so bent of the spring a may pass up through the openings cZ in the holders c into the holes e of the holders c', and the ends of the spring' a enter directly into the holes al of the holders c. The back ends of these holders are secured by and work upon pins or screws n on the plate k.
The plate k is provided with teeth on its front edge, for the purpose of taking firm hold of the edge of the carpet, and also with a shank to receive a handle, o.
The holders may be made to operate with one side ixed stationary, while the other yields to receive the tack and to release itself' from the tack when partially driven.
The stretcher may be made with one pair of holders, and, perhaps, in practice it may be found best to do so. The design or particular object of two pairs of holders is to hold the tack erect, which it is believed may be accomplished by one pair, and it may be done by having one part fixed and only one part made to yield to receive the tack.
By the use of this invention the operator inserts the point of thetack into the opening a' provided therefor in the holders o and the teeth of the stretcher into the edge of the carpet, and pushes it to the desired place in the usual way, and drives the tack held in the stretcher. In this way I am enabled to hold the carpet and drive the tack directly at the point where it is stretched, and to do so with greater ease and facility and less damage to the carpet.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construct-ion, and operation of this improvement so as to enable a person skilled to make and use the same therefrom.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The holders o and springs a or their equivalents, in combination with the plate lc, substantially as and for the purpose described.
