Description

llNrrEn STATES THOMAS LEE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PEANUT-ROASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,081, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed July 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LEE, of Oin cinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinPeanut-Roasters, which im p rovement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail drawing of the detachable receptacle, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional drawing of the corner of the roaster-body. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the detachable warmer.
The object of my invention is to improve the manufacture of peanut-roasters by cheapening and at the same time strengthening the body of the roaster; and, further, in the addition of a chestnutjwarmer, as will hereinafter he more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the roaster, having legs B,madc of angle-iron, as shown more fully by sectional view, Fig. 3.
Heretofore in making the bodies of roasters the sides A and ends 0 were joined within the angle of the leg B by means of a seam. This is-both expensive and tedious, and to improve this I bend the ends of A and G into right angles and lap them, as shown in Fig. 8, the corners thus made being covered by the angle-iron and riveted by means of bolts. a, or soldered, if desired.
In the manufacture of peanut-roasters the receptacle O has always been provided with a lid covering only a portion of the top of the receptacle; but this does not give sufficient room to gain admittance to the interior of the receptacle.
The method of manufacturing a cover by having a portion rigidly affixed to the receptacle O is expensive, and, in addition, it became necessary to put the spire slightly to one side of the apex of lid P, which greatly detracts from its appearance. To obviate this I place the spire in the center of the lid and hinge it to one side, at Q, as shown. The chain It holds the lid when in a vertical position.
An additional receptacle for nuts of various kinds is provided for by means of a rim, D,
attached to the furnace end of the roasterbody A. An elbow, E, having an upward curve, is placed on this rim and fastened thereto by means of a bolt, (1. When desired, the elbow can be removed and a cap placed over the rim.
The upper end of elbow E has a funnelshaped enlargement, F, and pipe G, on one side of which is a slide, N, which is used to open or close the vent in the pipe, and thus regulate the draft.
The nut-warmer is constructed in the form of a cylinder, H, having a frusto-couical bottom, I, and top J, both of which are inverted, so that the part I passes down within the pipe G, and the part J forms the receptacle for the nuts. The intervening space between the top J and bottom I is intended to be supplied with. water through the supply-pipe L on one side of H. On the opposite side of the warmer H is an ordinary whistle, M, such as are used on roasters. A conical lid, K, having a ven tpipe at its apex, is hinged to the top of the warmer H at 70.
In Fig. 1 the dotted lines A show the location of the furnace for the roaster.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a peanut'roaster, the combination of the parts A (J, formed at right angles, as shown, and lapped, with the leg B, made of an gle-iron covering the corner and riveted or soldered thereto, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The detachable warmer H, having a receptacle, J, and conical base I, pipes F G, with slide N and elbow E, the whole being attached to the furnace end of a peanut-roaster by means of a rim, 1), and bolt cl, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto affixed my name inthe presence of witnesses.
THOMAS LEE.
Witnesses:
' J. S. ZERBE,
OASSIUS SHOTWELL.
