Feed-Rolls for Lumber.`

Ulvr'ivnnV STATES Phfriiravfr OFFICE.
W`ILLIAM I. HALE, OF LOCK HAVEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-ROLLS FOR LUMBER.
Specification forming part o f Letters Patent No. 133,775, dated December 10, 1872.
10 all whom it may concern: i Y
Be it known that I, WVM.V P. HALE, of Lock Haven, in thecounty of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and p for working lumber 5 and it consists in inserting saws lengthwise in the roller by means of grooves in the roller, and then upsetting the grooves against the saws so as to hold them solid in place. f
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my feed-roller for lumber with two of the saws raised out of their grooves.
A represents the roller, of any suitabledimensions, and made of such metal aswill readily admit of the manipulations necessaryr to complete the feed-roller. made a series of longitudinal grooves, a a., which radiate from the center at suitable distances apart. In each of these grooves is inserted a saw, B, which may either be made expressly or the purpose, or any old sawblades of proper size may be used, if so desired. The saws B B are held solid in place by upsetting the grooves against them.
By thisV construction of the feed-roller the timber is acted upon by bevel-pointed teeth, which operates far better than the feed-rollers now most generally in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A feed-roller for lumber, consisting ef a roller A provided with longitudinal radiating grooves a a, and saws` B B inserted in said grooves and held solid in place by the grooves being upset, substantially as herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as -my own I afx my signature in presence oi' two witnesses.
WILLIAM PI HALE.
