ments in Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invent circular washers.
The principal object of this inventionis to provide a punch and die which will;
one operation form and cut articles ,rcquir mg piercing and contour shearing of the ex: llllOl in a rapld manner. i i i s,
A further ob ect s to provide means whereby the material is held from buckling or crimping during the cutting operation;
Theseand other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and. shown in the accompanying drawings, forming material which I Figure l is a vertical sectional view taken substantially through the center of a punch part of this disclosure, and in and die made in accordance with the invention. a
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the punch element. Fig. 3 is a plan and horizontal sectional view of the die element, the section being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical transt crse sectional view taken substantiallythrough the center of the punch and die, showing a modification thereof.
The mechanism comprises a die block 10, substantially rectangular, provided With paired openings 11 near the ends adapted to receive bolts or like fastening devices, whereby the die block may be secured to a bolster or bed of the press as is usual.
A plate 12, formed with the punch holder 18, contains a pair of hardened bushings or sleeves 14, the same slidably encirclingguide posts or studs secured in the die block 10, while their upper ends 16 are enlarged andextended toward each other for purposes which will be further on apparent.
Extending above the plate 12, is a punch holder head 18, having a stem 19, containing a small central bore 20, communicating with Specification of Letters Patent.
York, have on relates to improvements in punches and dies as used in connection with power presses and particularly to those used for cutting disks, containinga central i i the guide posts 15, thereby opening, commonly known as and down, ting ring 33 will movewith the punch head,.
15 having their lower ends atented J lily 1,
an enlarged central annular opening21, to
whichis-fitted a cylindrical center 22, the same being held thereln by a 23, passed through the head 18 punch taper pin The punch 20extends downward into. a furtherenlarged chamber 24:, :its Wallscontaining oppositely disposed elongated transverse vertical slots to receive a cross bar 26, having flattened extendingouter ends 27 adapted to contact with the lowerqsurtace of the heads .16, of
limiting the upper lIlOVfilIlGllllyQf the bar.
The cross bar 26 passes through a similar slot28; formeddn thepunch22, and also passes through a sleeve or bushing 30, slid ably engaged upon the exterioro'f thepunch 22. i The lower 1 reduced end ing 30 is slidable within a liardel ied steel ring or outline punches, set in a. holder 3, resting against a shoulder therein, the ring 3%, in turn .lresting on a. corresponding shoulder formed in the punch head 18. lThus, as the'punchcholder is moved-up obviously the punch 22 and cutbut the action of the sleeve element 31 is controlled by the bar 26 operatingin the slots 25, the bar being also prevented from rising beyond a definite limit due to the eugagel'nent of the overhanging post ends 16. The plate 12, is connected with the die holder 10, by a pair of guide bolts 36, so as to prevent complete separation of the parts, but permitting theplate 12, together with the punch holder to operate in a normal manner.
Fixed in the die plate 10, is anannular die holder 38, containing a round die 39 the inner diameter the outer diaineterof the punch 22, which forms the central opening through the punching or washer outer diameter 11 of the die 39 is adapted 31 of the bush lower surface oi the 40 of which corresponds with produced, while the ring 33,.thereby shearing tho outline of the washer. i
The. die 39 is held in intimate relation With the upper surface of the die block by a platet2 held in position by screws 4-3 which pass through encircling springs 44, contacting'at their upper. ends with the bottom of the recesses provided for them, and at their lower ends screws 43, thereby permitting the clamp plate 42to rise slightly, should the die 39 with the headset the I claim as new and desire to secureby Letstick to the punch, while the sleeve. 31 is adapted to make contact withthe washer material disposed on the upper surface of the die, preventing the thin material from buckling or otherwise becoming distorted;
The material is moved forward when the punchrises in the usual manner, while the punched center part is dropped through the opening 40, and die bed as usual.
Having thus described my invention what ters Patent, is
1. In a punch and die for cutting washers, the combination with a die plate, a die removably engaged therein, a pressure plate for holding said die against said die plate,
- ring punch.
2. In a punch and die for cutting washers,
the combination with a die plate, a circular die block secured therein, a circular die in said die block, a clamp plate spring held to said die block, said clamp plate holding said die in operative position, a punch holder, means for maintaining said punch holder in vertical relation to said die block, means for gulding said punch holder, a con ter punch removably engaged in said punch holder, a ring punch secured in said punch holder circumjacent to said center punch, a clamp sleeve slidably engaged between said cente punch and said ring punch, means for limiting the movement of said clamp sleeve, and means for bringing said clamp sleeve downward below the cutting edge in said punch ring prior to the initial movement of the said punch holder.
3. In a punch and die for cutting circular washers having a central aperture, of adie block adapted to be secured to a press, a die plate rigidly engaged therein, a die set in said die plate, means for holding said die resiliently upon said die plate, a pair of vertical guides rigidly fixed in said punch plate, a punch holder having a part slidable on said guides, a pair of bolts for limiting F the separation of said punch holder and said die block, a center punch removably engaged 1n sald punch holder, a shdmg sleeve on said punch adapted to act as a pressure element on the material to be cut, a ring fixed in said punch holder adapted to cut the exterior of the washer, and means for moving said sleeve downward when said punch is raised to its highest position.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixcd my signature.
