Chuan Yan
About Me
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at Stanford University, working with Maneesh Agrawala in the Brown Institute for Media Innovation. My research focuses on human vision, human-AI collaboration, and creative design. I obtained my Ph.D. from George Mason University, advised by Yotam Gingold, and my Bachelor’s in Communication Engineering from Southwest Jiaotong University.

- [Jun. 2026] Our project Grammar of Hatching: Synthesizing Tonal Art Maps from Natural Language received a 2026-2027 MAGIC Grant from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation — my second MAGIC Grant. The project lets artists produce real-time pen-and-ink 3D renderings by describing a texture in plain language. This is a collaboration with Mia Tang.
- [Jun. 2025] Our project HiFiSketch, a tool that transforms hand-drawn sketches into fully editable digital artwork, received a 2025-2026 Magic Grant from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation. This is a collaboration with Lvmin Zhang.
- [Apr. 2025] Our paper Instance Segmentation of Scene Sketches Using Natural Image Priors was accepted to SIGGRAPH 2025. This is a collaboration with Mia Tang, Yael Vinker, Lvmin Zhang and Maneesh Agrawala.
- [Apr. 2025] Our paper Generating Past and Future in Digital Painting Processes was accepted to SIGGRAPH 2025 and will appear in a special issue of TOG. This is a collaboration with Lvmin Zhang, Yuwei Guo, Jinbo Xing and Maneesh Agrawala.
