Bloomberg's 2026 African Top 25 Startups to Watch list tells you where fintech is heading on the continent. The most interesting companies are not building another app. They are fixing hard infrastructure problems: payments fragmentation, informal savings, credit scoring, mobile money gaps, SME lending, rider insurance, diaspora finance. Eight fintechs worth following: HUB24 Limited, Ivory Coast: unified payments infrastructure for West Africa Nkwa App, Cameroon: savings tools built for informal economies Omnisient - Collaborative Consumer Intelligence, South Africa: AI-powered alternative credit scoring AzamPay, Mauritius/Tanzania: digital payment infrastructure for East Africa Black Swan, Tanzania: AI-based credit assessment for small businesses Oye Kenya, : insurance and credit for boda boda riders through fuel purchases PawaPay, UK/Africa: mobile money connectivity across 20 African markets Sycamore.NG , Nigeria: digital lending and diaspora financial services What connects them is the practical nature of the problems. Savings. Credit. Payments. Insurance. Money movement. These are the building blocks that still do not work reliably for most people and businesses across Africa. The next fintech winners may not be the loudest brands on the continent. They may be the ones quietly fixing what traditional finance left broken. Bloomberg has named three Tanzanian companies among its 25 African Startups to Watch for 2026. They are AzamPay in payments, Black Swan in credit, and SafeSip in clean water. AzamPay, owned by the Bakhresa Group and led by Firas Ahmad, moves more than $350 million a year across East Africa. It runs a Visa partnership and is preparing to add stablecoin and remittance services. Black Swan makes credit software that banks, fintechs, and other lenders use to judge who can repay, including people with no formal financial record. Atoms & Bits first covered the company in 2024, when it launched under its former name, Tausi. It won the 2025 MEST Africa Challenge and is testing in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Malawi. The startup SafeSip runs solar-powered stations that purify and dispense clean water without on-site staff, using AI to manage upkeep and motorcycle tankers to reach households out of walking range. Its four sites serve more than 6,000 people a month, and waterborne disease is down by more than a third in the areas it covers. Founder Faith Kuya is in the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2026 cohort. South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya led the Bloomberg list with four companies each. #Africa #Startups #Tech

When credit systems are built around how people actually live and work, credit stops being a barrier. It becomes infrastructure that builds the backbone of the economy. Across rural Tanzania, women and youth entrepreneurs are running real, growing businesses, but their financial lives are often invisible to traditional credit systems. This article highlights work by Financial Sector Deepening Tanzania, Creditinfo Tanzania, and Black Swan, showing how alternative data and smarter credit decisioning can turn everyday financial behavior into real access to productive credit. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/dPVEqfDG
A key barrier to accessing productive credit for underserved MSMEs in the rural areas is the inability of traditional credit assessment models to accurately capture their realities and creditworthiness. In response, financial sector players are advancing the use of alternative credit scoring models as a practical and scalable solution. Explore how this initiative has the potential to unlock access to productive credit for underserved MSMEs in rural areas, especially those that are women-owned or led, shaping a more inclusive financial ecosystem. Black Swan was pleased to participate in the Tanzania Annual ICT Conference (TAIC) 2026, joining the Deloitte-led panel on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) focused on Building Tanzania’s Digital Economy. The discussion reaffirmed that DPI is more than technology, it is a foundation for national transformation and the delivery of Dira 2050. At Black Swan, we support DPI adoption by leveraging AI-driven tools, working with local talent, and collaborating across public and private sectors to reduce friction, strengthen trust, and enable inclusive, interoperable digital systems. Great to share the stage with thought leaders committed to building citizen-centred digital infrastructure that accelerates Tanzania’s digital economy. #TAIC2026 #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #DigitalTransformation #Dira2050 #TanzaniaDigitalEconomy #BlackSwan ICT_Commission_Tanzania
