Meer dan ooit staat de palliatieve zorg (zorg voor patiënten met levensbedreigende aandoeningen en hun naasten) in de belangstelling. Samen met academische en maatschappelijke instellingen heeft de overheid initiatieven ontwikkeld om de palliatieve zorg verder te ontwikkelen. De kennis over palliatieve zorg neemt in hoog tempo toe. Toch blijkt dat er grote groepen patiënten en naasten zijn die niet profiteren van deze nieuwe kennis en inzichten.
Dit boek wil bruikbare wetenschappelijke kennis over de palliatieve zorg toegankelijk maken voor zowel professionals als vrijwilligers in de zorg. Vele artikelen gepubliceerd in wetenschappelijke, Engelstalige vakbladen zijn in begrijpelijk Nederlands herschreven en opgenomen in dit boek. Een brede selectie is gemaakt van werk van Nederlandse en Vlaamse auteurs dat bruikbaar, toepasbaar en/of inzichtelijk is voor de praktijk. De artikelen zijn onderverdeeld in zes thema's: Problemen en symptomen in de palliatieve zorg; Behandelingen inde palliatieve zorg; Palliatieve sedatie; Medische beslissingen aan het levenseinde; De rol van verpleegkundigen in de palliatieve zorg; Kenmerken van de zorg.
