This book covers the basic pathology of eye diseases with emphasis on clinicopathological correlation. About the editors
Dr. Geeta K. Vemuganti is a renowned ocular pathologist with over 25 years of experience in eye pathology and research. A graduate of J.L.N. Medical College, Ajmer, she completed her pathology residency at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. At the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), she established a globally recognized eye pathology lab and served as Head of Ophthalmic Pathology Services. She was the founding Dean of LVPEI's School of Medical Sciences and a fellow of ARVO and the National Academy of Medical Sciences and currently serves as Professor of Eminence and senior mentor at LVPEI, Hyderabad.
She has authored 300+ peer-reviewed publications, with 8,585 citations and an H-index of 53. In her checkered career, she has secured multiple prestigious national and international grants and awards, including ARVO’s prestigious Mildred Weisenfeld Award. Some of her contributions include the WHO Classification of Eye Tumors (2018) and several seminal publications.
Dr. Somasheila Murthy is a cornea and anterior segment specialist, trained at BYL Nair Hospital and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Mumbai. She completed two fellowships, one at LVPEI in cornea and anterior segment and a research fellowship in uveitis and ocular pathology at the Doheny Eye Institute, USC, under Prof. Narsing A. Rao.
She led the Cornea and Anterior Segment Services at LVPEI for over a decade and served on its faculty for 23 years. Now the founding Medical Director of the Shantilal Shanghvi Eye Institute, Mumbai, her expertise spans corneal disease, ocular inflammation, trauma, refractive surgery, and complex cataract procedures. She has published over 200 articles and 12 book chapters, with 4,473 citations and an H-index of 37. An invited speaker at national and international forums, she has earned awards for research and leadership and serves on the Scientific Committee of the All-India Ophthalmological Society. She has a passion for teaching and mentorship, especially women’s empowerment.
Dr. Dilip Kumar Mishra, MD in Pathology from the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, is a consultant at the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, LVPEI, Hyderabad. Formerly with Manipal Medical College and several accredited labs in Hyderabad, he has received specialized training in onco-pathology and cytopathology from Apollo Hospital, University College London, and Moorfields Eye Institute.
His research centers on cancer stem cells, squamous neoplasia, infections, and corneal dystrophies, and he is currently pursuing a PhD. Dr. Mishra has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and a chapter in a cell and molecular biology textbook. He has presented at international conferences, including SACH and BAOP at Oxford University. A life member of multiple pathology societies, he was selected to present at the Government of India’s Young Scientists Conclave and has trained pathologists in African nations. He serves as Associate Editor of BMC Ophthalmology and reviewer for various journals, earning both national and international accolades.
