Zehn Jahre lang hat der Strukturwandel im Ruhrgebiet durch die Internationale Bauausstellung Emscher Park ökologische und kulturelle Impulse erfahren. Neue Landschaften und Industrienatur, neue Nutzungen für Industriedenkmäler, Reaktivierung von Industriebrachen und Baukultur wurden in über 100 Projekten realisiert.
Der Neubau von rund 2.500 Wohnungen setzt die Siedlungskultur der Gartenstadt im Ruhrgebiet fort - mit (Stadt)Baukultur, Nachbarschaft und neuen (alten) Wohnformen.
Am Beispiel von über 20 neuen und alten Gartenstadtsiedlungen zeigen Aufsätze und Reportagen Alternativen zum Siedlungsbrei am Stadtrand auf.
