{"id":125231,"date":"2020-03-03T07:20:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T12:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/?p=125231"},"modified":"2026-02-05T04:41:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T09:41:44","slug":"finances-of-fortnite-part-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/blog\/finances-of-fortnite-part-two\/","title":{"rendered":"Finances of Fortnite (Season 2): In-Game Spending Increases by 21%"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nearly two years ago, as <em>Fortnite<\/em>-mania was sweeping the planet, we released the results of a <a href=\"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/blog\/finances-of-fortnite\/\">survey of 1,000 <em>Fortnite<\/em> gamers<\/a> that found some pretty interesting trends, especially those of a financial nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The free cooperative survival game that makes its money off optional in-game purchases is still going strong in 2020 and has <a rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"changed the industry landscape (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2019\/11\/14\/20965516\/fortnite-battle-royale-most-important-game-2010s\" target=\"_blank\">changed the industry landscape<\/a> forever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <em>Fortnite<\/em> not showing any signs of slowing down, we decided to revisit the topic by surveying 1,000 <em>Fortnite<\/em> gamers to see how their habits have changed since 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#survey\">Click here to jump to the full survey results<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Observations &amp; Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fortnite In-Game Spending Has Increased in Frequency &amp; Amount<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When we first conducted this survey in June of 2018, <strong>69% of respondents<\/strong> indicated that they had spent money on <em>Fortnite<\/em> in-game purchases. This time around, that increased by eight percentage points, with <strong>77% of respondents<\/strong> in 2020 stating that they have spent money on the video game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, <em>Fortnite<\/em> spenders are coughing up quite a bit more cash on average compared to our first <em>Finances of Fortnite <\/em>report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script id=\"infogram_0_1eacc9e6-09e5-45e6-9cf4-557e3bae51c1\" title=\"fortnite spending \" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?HdT\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\n<noscript>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/copy-fortnite-spending-mw.png\">\n<\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>Average spending on in-game purchases increased by <strong>21% between the 2018 and 2020 surveys, rising from $84.67 to $102.42<\/strong>. Additionally, we found that <strong>58% of the total money spent<\/strong> by the average <em>Fortnite<\/em> spender in 2020 was done in the last 12 months, which perhaps serves as proof that this video game phenomenon has no intention of slowing down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, <strong>35% Fortnite spenders<\/strong> from the 2020 survey admitted they were unaware that in-game purchases did not give them an advantage over other players. That <strong>percentage was only 20% <\/strong>in the 2018 study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>34% of this year&#8217;s spenders<\/strong>, <em>Fortnite<\/em> was the first game that they started making in-game purchases, which was close to the first <strong>report&#8217;s percentage of  37%<\/strong>. <em>Fortnite<\/em> being able to bring in a considerable percentage of first-time in-game purchasers speaks volumes of the game&#8217;s uniqueness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About That IRS Thing&#8230;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>With tax season upon us, there have been some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/7kz4yg\/should-you-declare-fortnite-virtual-currency-on-your-taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"stories (opens in a new tab)\">stories<\/a> circulating that the IRS was going to require tax filers to report their V-bucks in this year&#8217;s tax forms. V-bucks are the in-game currency provided to <em>Fortnite<\/em> gamers to spend after they have deposited real dollars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until this past Wednesday, February 12th, the IRS guidance for taxpayers included language that V-bucks were to be treated like virtual currency and would subsequently need to be declared on tax forms. The IRS guidance stated the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cVirtual currency that has an equivalent value in real currency, or that acts as a substitute for real currency, is referred to as \u2018convertible\u2019 virtual currency. Bitcoin, Ether, Roblox, and V-bucks are a few examples of a convertible virtual currency.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After attention was brought to this, the IRS removed the language on its website referring to V-bucks, but confusion remains as the agency has maintained the definition of a convertible virtual currency and has not yet excluded in-game currencies from that definition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked our <em>Fortnite<\/em> in-game spenders a couple of questions related to this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script id=\"infogram_0_c583e46b-adc3-49ad-837a-6c804669337b\" title=\"IRS Fortnite questions\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?j7X\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\n<noscript>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/copy-irs-fortnite-questions-mw.png\">\n<\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>Judging from the results of question five, it appears the confusion surrounding this issue has carried over to <em>Fortnite<\/em> in-game purchasers as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking at Video Game-Related Spending Outside of Fortnite In-Game Purchases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The video game industry, in part due to the advent of <em>Fortnite<\/em>, has boomed in recent years and evolved into something much, much bigger than the days of buying a game at GameStop, beating it, and then returning it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are eSport leagues that pit video game teams from cities against each other and mega-star gamers like Ninja, who <a rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"reportedly (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/techiegamers.com\/how-much-money-does-ninja-make\/\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> makes $18 million a year largely from playing video games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked some questions related to these other moneymakers revolving around video games. For example, <strong>50% of respondents<\/strong> have paid for merchandise related to <em>Fortnite<\/em> or a specific video game streamer like Ninja, who has his own Adidas apparel line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of the questions were related to Twitch, the video game streaming service that enables consumers to buy subscriptions to watch certain professional gamers. In 2020, <strong>22% of respondents<\/strong> pay for a Twitch subscription account, while <strong>76% do not<\/strong>. Comparatively, <strong>25% of respondents <\/strong>from the 2018 survey indicated they paid for a Twitch subscription account, while <strong>72% had not<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script id=\"infogram_0_21c23307-c532-4c96-96be-5d490d5d43eb\" title=\"Twitch Fortnite 2020\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?NaM\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\n<noscript>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/copy-twitch-fortnite-2020-mw.png\">\n<\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">eSports vs. Traditional Sports<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The last three questions of the survey pitted eSports against traditional sports to gauge how much ground, if any, video games are making on sports like baseball, football, and basketball, amongst others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you scoff at that notion, major cities around the world are <a rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"building eSport stadiums (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2018\/11\/30\/the-rise-of-esports-as-a-spectator-phenomenon\/\" target=\"_blank\">building eSport stadiums<\/a> that can host tens of thousands of spectators, while eSport tournaments are easily attracting tens of millions of viewers via television and other streaming mediums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script id=\"infogram_0_2465cf22-f0e2-4bad-a14a-80a7b6ee84a1\" title=\"esports vs traditional sports\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?tbC\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\n<noscript>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/copy-esports-vs-traditional-sports-mw.png\">\n<\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>While eSport&#8217;s takeover of traditional sports will not happen overnight, the numbers from the questions are certainly encouraging for eSport fans and are indicative of the major inroads the burgeoning industry has made already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compared to 2018, It Appears Fortnite Has Become Slightly Less Time Consuming <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In both versions of the <em>Fortnite<\/em> survey, poll participants were asked to estimate how many hours per week they spend playing the cooperative survival game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, judging by the results it looks like <em>Fortnite<\/em> gamers are committing slightly less time each week to playing the video game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script id=\"infogram_0_ea423683-07d6-4b43-bba1-8ed06aaf5f17\" title=\"Time per week playing fortnite\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?R9s\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script>\n<noscript>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lendedu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/copy-time-per-week-playing-fortnite-mw-1.png\">\n<\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"survey\">Full Survey Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>All survey results come from an online survey of 1,000 Americans that play Fortnite. The survey was commissioned by LendEDU and conducted by Pollfish. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"paragraph-above-list\"><strong> (1) Have you ever spent money on in-game purchases for Fortnite?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list paragraph-above-list\">\n<li>77% of respondents answered &#8220;Yes&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21% of respondents answered &#8220;No&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2% of respondents answered &#8220;I&#8217;d rather not say&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"paragraph-above-list\"><strong>(2 &#8211; Asked only to those who answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; to Q1) In your best estimation, how much money have you spent in total on in-game purchases for Fortnite?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list paragraph-above-list\">\n<li>The average <em>Fortnite<\/em> player that has spent money on the game has spent $102.42 on in-game purchases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encompassing all <em>Fortnite<\/em> players (spenders &amp; non-spenders), the average amount spent on in-game purchases was $78.55.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"paragraph-above-list\"><strong>(3 &#8211; Asked only to those who answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; to Q1) What percentage of your total money spent on Fortnite in-game purchases has been spent in the last 12 months? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list paragraph-above-list\">\n<li>58% of the total money spent by the average <em>Fortnite<\/em> player that has spent money on in-game purchases has been spent in the last 12 months. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"paragraph-above-list\"><strong>(4 &#8211; Asked only to those who answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; to Q1) Are you aware that the IRS had included language that would require the use of in-game virtual currency that was purchased with real dollars, like V-bucks, to be reported on tax forms?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list paragraph-above-list\">\n<li>25% of respondents answered &#8220;Yes&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>75% of respondents answered &#8220;No&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"paragraph-above-list\"><strong>(5 &#8211; Asked only to those who answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; to Q1) While the IRS has since scrubbed that language, many still believe video game currencies will need to be reported on tax returns. Just be wary of what current credit card interest rates are looking like so that you know if you are getting a good deal or not on the credit card you are interested in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methodology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All data found within this report is based on an online survey commissioned by LendEDU and conducted online by research company Pollfish. In total, 1,000 Americans that indicated they play <em>Fortnite<\/em> were surveyed. The appropriate respondents were found via a screener question. This survey was conducted on February 18, 2020.
