Eyes vs Mouth
Why do kaomoji look different from Western emoticons? Research suggests that in Western cultures, emotional cues are often sought in the mouth (hence :D vs :(). However, in East Asian cultures, specifically Japan, the eyes are considered the window to the soul.
This is why Japanese emoticons focus heavily on changing the eyes. For example, (^_^) represents smiling eyes, while (T_T) represents crying eyes. The mouth often remains a simple underscore or period. This focus on the eyes makes kaomoji inherently "cuter" or kawaii.
