WE HAVE BEEN SELECTED BY European Space Agency - ESA AS A CONSORTIUM PARTNER FOR LYRA PROJECT 🇪🇺 🫱🏻🫲🏼 Alongside European top-tier companies Alén Space and WiRan Sp. z o.o. and led by SpaceLocker we are part of a €1.2M consortium to contribute to the design of mission concepts for the future of European sovereign space connectivity. The challenge? Connect Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to the upcoming sovereign IRIS² constellation, without requiring heavy hardware modifications on existing satellite platforms. The LYRA solution - an in-orbit gateway providing: • Near-real-time connectivity using standard S and X-band radios • Onboard edge processing to maximize mission reactivity • Highly secure, sovereign backhaul links to the ground This activity will study the groundwork for a first In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) targeted for 2029, the precursor to a permanent European space relay network. How can Europe scale globally without losing its roots? This was the central question of the panel "How to Achieve Global Growth with National Roots" at the International Space Summit in Paris, where I had the opportunity to share Leaf Space's perspective on balancing international growth with a strong European identity. For Leaf Space, global expansion is a business ambition but also a technical necessity. Satellites orbit the Earth, and supporting them effectively requires infrastructure that spans continents. Today, our network supports more than 300 satellites through 40+ ground stations worldwide, while our technology, software, operational expertise, and strategic control remain firmly rooted in Europe. One of the most interesting takeaways from the discussion was that European sovereignty and global growth should not be seen as opposing objectives. On the contrary, globally deployed and European-controlled infrastructure can reinforce Europe's strategic autonomy while enabling companies to compete successfully on a global stage. As Europe's space ecosystem continues to grow and evolve, I believe we must remain ambitious: building internationally, partnering globally, and innovating at scale, while continuing to leverage the talent, expertise, and values that make Europe a leader in the space sector.
