I've written a khal-distribution command (I already have similar ones for todo list items and Git commits) to visualize my physical activities of the last year, separated into cycling (in kilometers, assuming one hour of indoor cycling equals 20 km) and steps walked / jogged. Naturally, cycling started in spring, the very long distances happened in summer, and it then petered out in autumn again. Jogging was my main activity in early 2025; the remainder of the year were occasional walks.

I predominantly started my cycling tours and jogging around 15:00 in the afternoon (after some time had passed since lunch, so I wouldn't start the exercise with a full belly). Indoor cycling began much later at 18:00, and like jogging has far less variation in length. Jogging ended mostly around 17:00 (coinciding with darkness approaching early in winter), whereas my cycling ended at 18:00 (spring and autumn); in summertime it also extended beyond 20:00, and occasionally into dusk.

Last year, I've cycled 8192 km; that's almost double the distance of the previous year! 1011 km / ⅛ (or more; recording only started in July) were on a tandem bike.

$ khal lastyear tally 'cyc'
8192 km
Total effort: 75ed (447h) over 11 months (from 2025-01-12 until 2025-12-08)

My tours averaged 73 km this year (up 50% from the previous year); the longest was 220 km (+250%), a scenic route along the rivers Würm, Enz and Neckar, which took me to Pforzheim, Mühlacker, Vaihingen (Enz), Bietigheim, Besigheim, Marbach, Stuttgart, and Esslingen on 03-Sep-2025 for 12.5 hours.
For this year, I hope I'll be able to extend this another 50 km all the way to Tübingen, and/or replace the Würmtal leg with the Nagoldtal!

Instead of jogging, I spent this winter on my stationary bike, which is our old trike tandem (where the electric motor got fried) converted to an indoor (rather: inside shed) trainer with the ThinkRider XX-PRO smart trainer. I've enjoyed 40 hours of riding on it so far. Unlike jogging, it can be done after dusk has settled, in any weather, and you can even watch videos (or compete with other riders in apps like MyWhoosh) while pedalling! That makes it an easy and attractive option.

$ khal lastyear tally 'icyc'
Total effort: 7ed (40h) over 1.5 months (from 2025-11-16 until 2025-12-31)

For jogging, the season centers around wintertime, and I did 419 thousand steps in the 2024/5 winter.

$ KHAL_LASTYEAR_START_MONTH=07 khal lastyear tally 'jog'
419 k
Total effort: 9ed (51h) over 7.4 months (from 2024-11-06 until 2025-06-16)

Add to that 142 thousand steps of walking.

$ khal lastyear tally 'walk'
142 k
Total effort: 4ed (23h) over 1 year (from 2025-01-07 until 2025-12-25)

Overall, my physical exercise was 540 hours (that's 89 minutes per day on average)! And it shows: My belly and waistline got noticeably smaller, and I need to wear a belt now with most of my jeans.

$ khal lastyear tally -Y 'i\?cyc\|jog\|walk'
Total effort: 90ed (540h) over 1 year (from 2025-01-07 until 2025-12-31)

Trip recording and tracking was done via OsmAnd on my mobile phone and my Redmi Watch 5 Lite fitness watch. I've then recorded the activity time and type, number of kilometers / steps, and later also bike type in my personal Nextcloud calendar. I use the khal command-line tool and vdirsyncer to query and obtain that data, and have written some khal extension commands that you see in the terminal sessions above. Combined with my other, extensive Linux terminal tooling, this makes it super easy to do ad-hoc queries and generate insightful summaries!
