Post 1: How do we identify entrepreneurs? At Udyamie, partner NGO officers are first trained to understand the varied nature of entrepreneurs and enterprises. The officers then take these concepts into the field. They meet entrepreneurs in their own geographies, observe, ask questions and practise articulating both - the entrepreneurial traits they see and how the enterprise is functioning. This matters because an entrepreneur cannot be understood only through an application form, qualification or predetermined profile. And a business cannot be understood only by looking at the product being sold. What does entrepreneurship look like when you start with what you already have? In a village in the Dhule region, one entrepreneur has created a small source of income just outside his home. Every afternoon, at around 3 PM, he sets out a table, four chairs and a carrom board. People from the neighbourhood come by to play. A game costs ₹10 per person. With four players, that is ₹40 per game. Each game lasts roughly ten minutes. By the time he closes around 8 or 9 PM, he earns approximately ₹300–₹400 a day. But there is another small detail in his story that stayed with us. Carrom boards usually use boric powder to help the coins glide smoothly. For him, buying boric powder regularly was an additional expense. So he found an alternative. Atta. Something already available at home, used instead to keep the board smooth and the games going. It is a small adaptation. But it tells us something important about grassroots entrepreneurship. Enterprise does not always begin with a large investment, a formal shop or sophisticated technology. Sometimes it begins with a table, four chairs, a carrom board—and the ability to make the most of what is available.
